Earth Summit • Agenda 21 was revealed at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) • In Rio on June 14th 1992 • 179 governments voted to adopt the programme • The final text was the result of drafting, consultation and negotiation, beginning in 1989 and culminating at the two-week conference

  3. Agenda 21 • Programme run by the UN related to sustainable development • Comprehensive blueprint of action to be taken: • Globally • Nationally • Locally • By various groups in every area where humans impact on the environment • UN organisations • Governments • Other major groups (NGOs)

  4. Sustainable Development • Brundtland definition of sustainable development developed during the Ro Earth Summit "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.“

  5. Agenda 21 Consists of 4 main sections: • Social And Economic Dimensions • Conservation And Management Of Resources • Strengthening The Role Of Major Groups • Means Of Implementation

  6. Agenda 21 • Social And Economic Dimensions • international co-operation • combating poverty • changing consumption patterns • population and sustainability • protecting and promoting human health • sustainable human settlements • making decisions for sustainable development.

Agenda 21 • Conservation And Management Of Resources • protecting the atmosphere • managing land sustainably • combating deforestation • combating desertification and drought • sustainable mountain development • sustainable agriculture and rural development • conservation of biological diversity • management of biotechnology • protecting and managing oceans • protecting and managing fresh water • safer use of toxic chemicals • managing hazardous wastes • managing solid wastes and sewage • managing radioactive wastes.
