  4. Obesity in the U.S. • Results from the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that an estimated: • 32.7 percent of U.S. adults 20 years and older are overweight, • 34.3 percent are obese • 5.9 percent are extremely obese • That totals 73% of adults being overweight or obese • Latinos, farmworkers in particular, are at even higher risk than other adults to be obese and have the complications that accompany obesity

  5. Vida Entera y Sana(Whole and Healthy Life) A three year demonstration grant funded by the federal Office of Minority Health to address obesity among Hispanic farmworkers in rural Oregon

  6. Focus on: • Increasing physical activity • Making healthy food choices • Handling stress and emotions in a healthy way

  7. Program overview • Recruited 14 obese Hispanic women who were interested in managing weight and becoming a Promotora • Worked with them for 6 months on their own weight management • Trained those who were successful to become Promotoras • The Promotoras conducted weight management outreach to their friends, families, coworkers

Outreach results First year of outreach completed by 7 Promotoras: • 109 intensive contacts (at least 3 visits each, with a goal set) • 284 “casual” contacts (single visit encounters) • More than 200 additional contacts through group activities (Fiestas de Salud and other group events) • Of the intensive contacts • 89% set an exercise goal • 78% set a nutrition goal • 47% set a stress management goal 84% of people had kept at least one of their goals 4 weeks later

Outreach results Pre- and post-intervention changes in the outreach contacts • 186% increase in average hours per week of exercise (from 1.1 hours per week to 3.2 hours per week) • 129% increase in cups of vegetables eaten per day (from 0.7 cups per day to 1.5 cups per day) • 65% increase in number of pieces of fruit eaten per day (from 1.3 fruits per day to 2.2 fruits per day) • 22% increase in the number of people who knew healthy coping strategies for stress (from 60% who knew healthy strategies to 73%)
