  4. College Lake Nature Reserve College Lake provides a wildlife experience for the whole family. A former chalk quarry, near Tring, this reserve has been transformed into a thriving centre for wildlife and supports over 1,000 species. It boasts panoramic views of the surrounding farmland and Chiltern hills and is now a haven for many migrating birds. Seasonal highlights Wild daffodils, bluebells and cowslips in spring A blaze of colour with corncockle, pheasant's eye and cornflower in summer A bustling community of wildfowl and waterbirds, including waders, great crested grebe, wigeon, teal, little winged plover and snipe in winter. May 2009 Rare Polecats spotted!

  5. Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve • Aston Rowant NNR sits on the steep west-facing scarp of the Chilterns. It comprises flower-rich chalk grassland together with beech woodland and juniper scrub. One of the best places in England to see red kites. The summer months are the best time to visit for butterflies and flowers. Highlights: Butterflies include the dark green and Duke of Burgundy fritillary, chalkhill blue, brown argus and silver-spotted skipper.
