  • We recognize the need to design a self sustaining telecommunications hut, that will run off renewable energy and incorporate GE’s NaMx battery to provide better cell phone coverage in developing countries with unreliable power girds.

  • After communicating with citizens of the small community of Wiruca, Nicaragua and considering the requirements set by General Electric, the design team established an appropriate customer needs assessment.

  • The design will need to provide significant energy to power all of the components of the hut as well as the BTS Unit requirement from GE

  • The design must maintain an appropriate operating temperature

  • The design will be self operating upon installation

  • The design will be able to function without a power grid and use a hybrid power supply of green energy while incorporating the GE Sodium Halide Battery

  • The design will be sustainable and will have a long lifespan

  • The design will be versatile and can be implemented throughout the entire country of Nicaragua

    We researched the individual uses and specs for each type of energy, and also looked into the combinations of any of the renewable energies.

Final Solution

  • The final design chosen to power the hut was a hybrid system involving solar panels that will power the hut when there is sunlight and charge the battery. The battery will then power the rest of the hut once the sun goes down or if the solar isn’t producing enough power. If this cycle for some reason wasn’t able to provide significant power to the hut, the back up generator will automatically kick on.

  • Solar Panels

    • Since our design only requires 1.442 kW of power seven panels will provide more than enough with a 1.715 kW output.

  • Battery

    • The battery will need 154.7 Watts to maintain the temperature of 300°C. The A2 model takes 7.2 hours to recharge the battery. Since our design requires 1.443 kW the battery will be able to supply power to our hut for 17.18 hours.

  • Generator

    • This particular generator has a 50-gallon tank. This is important because it requires less monitoring of the fuel and less maintenance. It has a 3.3 kW running at maximum speed and can operate with this output for near 111.1 hours.

  • Charge Controller

    • This model has a large heat sink and conservative design enables operating to full ratings to 45°C.It is very appealing because it connects to a personal computer for custom settings, data logging and remote monitoring and control.It is fully protected against reverse polarity, short circuit, overcurrent, high temperature and overvoltage.
