Exciting changes for the future Currently writing the BSc (Hons) programme Expecting Accreditation for this in Feb 2013 Recognises the increased contribution that ODPs make to patient care delivery Allows additional qualifications and skills to be built into the programme e.g. Role of the First Assistant, Cannulation 2013 will be our first intake of BSc Students

  3. What do Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) do? ODPs care for patients who are in hospital needing surgery Care for patients before, during and after an operation Ensure the safety, comfort and psychological well being of the patient

  4. ODPs checking & preparing the anaesthetic room and equipment

  5. ODPs supporting patients and assisting the anaesthetist

  6. ODPs preparing for surgery

  7. ODPs gowning and gloving

  8. ODPs preparing sterile instruments for surgery

  9. ODPs working with surgeons in theatre teams

  10. ODPs recover patients following surgery and anaesthesia to ensure their safety and wellbeing

  11. Where can I work when registered? • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a variety of healthcare environments including: • Specialist Operating Theatre Units • Post Anaesthetic Care Units • Day Surgery Units • Emergency Departments • Trauma • Intensive Care • Transplant Teams • Maternity Units • Special Care Baby Units • Community Hospitals • Resuscitation Teams

  16. Placements & Study Centres You may be required to travel for your clinical placements to develop a broader practice experience

Practice/Clinical Placements Gain the opportunity to work in Anaesthetic Practice, Surgical Practice and Post Anaesthetic Care Work with a range of health professionals in a multi-disciplinary team, gaining specialist clinical skills ensuring the safety of patients Placements take place throughout the South West, therefore you will be required to travel to and from placements

  19. The Qualification BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice Eligibility to apply for registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and membership of the College of Operating Department Practitioners (CODP)

Your Application What we look for: • Totality of the application • Academic qualifications including • – strong GCSE profile: five grades C or above (must include English, Maths and Science – preferably Human Biology. IT would be advantageous) • Minimum of 260 UCAS points: From A Levels • Must have a Science profile • Other equivalent qualifications are considered e.g. BTEC or ACCESS to HE, Science/Health related units as required

  24. If shortlisted as a prospective St ODP Group interview Individual Interview Certificates presented/confirmed Short hand-written piece on the ‘Role of the ODP’

  25. Recommended Study Skills Entry is competitive Students are advised to be positive about study skills as it will enable you to study more effectively. Addressing the following skills is particularly good preparation: Numeracy: Including fractions & decimals Literacy: Including academic writing, spelling and grammar IT skills: Word processing, e-mail and the use of the internet Read around Human Biology, Anatomy and Physiology
