THREE BASIC TENENTS THREE BASIC TENENTS OF THE PHILOSOPHIES OF ROUSSEAU AND MONTESQUIEU • Human society is governed by Natural laws. • These Natural laws can discovered by rational men. • Human society can turn from traditional, authoritarian forms, and progress toward a more perfect government through rational thought. Aim: How can we analyze the philosophies of Rousseau and Montesquieu?

GROUP WORK • Each group will have a different reading • DOC. 1-C is Montesquieu’s The Spirit of Laws • DOC. 1-D is Montesquieu’s section on government checks and balances, also from The Spirit of Laws • DOC. 1-E is from Rousseau’s The Social Contract • In your groups, find as many of the Three Basic Tenets as you can in the documents on government and come up with a list. Aim: How can we analyze the philosophies of Rousseau and Montesquieu?

  4. HOMEWORK USING THE LISTS THAT WERE CREATED IN CLASS, WRITE A ONE PARAGRAPH ESSAY ABOUT THE THREE BASIC TENETS THAT YOU FOUND IN YOUR READING TODAY IN CLASS. Aim: How can we analyze the philosophies of Rousseau and Montesquieu?
