  2. Introduction • Not everyone came to New France to trade furs or to farm; • Missionaries had a motive with exploration and settlement; • Missionaries faced the same dangers as the Coureurs de Bois with fewer resources.

  3. Reasons for Conversion • Different reasons for conversion just as settlers had different reasons for coming to New France; • Desire to bring Christianity to the Aboriginals; • Struggle between Catholics and Protestants; • Counter-Reformation took place to win back their followers.

  4. Early Missionaries • Earliest missionaries were the Recollets; • Poverty and indifference with fur traders made it difficult for their mission; • Society of Jesus, known as the Jesuits, replaced the Recollets; • Jesuits were more aggressive and welcomed by Champlain.

  5. Father Jean de Brebeuf • One of the most famous Jesuits; • Arrived in 1625, and spent most of his life with the Hurons in present day Midland; • Died when Iroquois defeated the Huron; • Also a talented musician.

  6. The Black Robes & Aboriginals • Set out to ‘bring the word of God;’ • Nickname came from the clothes they wore; • The missionaries and priests travelled into deep uncharted territory; • They observed Aboriginal customs, and were baptized in return.

  7. Schools • One of the missionaries motives was to build schools in New France; • Marie de l’Incarnation had a vision to educate young girls in New France; • Her son was said to cry out, “Give me back my mother.”

  8. Convents • In 1639, a group of nuns opened a convent for Aboriginal and French girls; • They were taught religion, housekeeping, reading, and writing.

  9. Hospitals • One of the first hospitals was opened in Ville-Marie (later Montreal); • The name was Hotel-Dieu (the house of God).
