  3. What is Radiation • Radiation is a wide variety of different waves. • Ion rays = most common • Causes excitation = energy change in cell • Rays lose energy as travel through cells • Lost energy disrupts chemical bonds in cells

Radiation: Effects on the Human Body • Some early symptoms to radiation sickness include (exposure to 100 rems or more) • Nausea and Headaches • Vomiting • Loss of White blood cells • Exposure to 300 rems or more can cause: • Temporary hair loss • Nerve damage • Severe loss of white blood cells • Exposure to 450 rems is a 50% chance of fatality • Exposure to 800+ rems is always fatal

  8. How Are Genetics Included? • Radiation Poisoning damages the cell nucleus. • This alters the chromosomes which are then passed down to the offspring. • The offspring have these disrupted chromosomes which can intern have mutations, loss of white blood cells, and other deformities.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Menu • Was the first use of an atomic weapon in war. • More people died from the radiation than the actual explosion itself. • People knew not of radiation sickness and where frightened of what it could do. • These atomic bombs were made under the codename“The Manhattan Project” • This included scientists from around the world, including Albert Einstein.
