WAIMR HISTORY

  • WAIMR founded by:

    - The University of Western Australia

    - Royal Perth Hospital

    - Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

  • Capital fundraising campaign (1998 – 1999)

    - Wesfarmers the founding sponsor

    - Strong support from State Government, donors/sponsors

  • 2003 - Fremantle Hospital joined WAIMR

  • Independent medical research Institute

  • Incorporated body under the Associations Incorporation Act of WA

  • Not-for-profit organisation

  • Charitable organisation under the Charitable Collections Act of WA

  • Affiliated with UWA

WAIMR PHILOSOPHY

  • Enhance medical research in WA

  • Focus on causes of adult diseases

  • Translate fundamental discovery research into clinical applications

  • Promote collaboration

  • Provide new research facilities

  • Support State-wide infrastructure (equipment, administration etc)

  • Recruit excellent researchers

  • Emphasis on genetic-based research into adult diseases:

    • Heart / Lung diseases
