Limerick. By Áine and Emily. . Limerick city. Limerick is the 4 th most populated city in Ireland. Limerick is also known as the Shannon region. The city is built on several curves and islands of the River Shannon ,which spreads into an estuary shortly down river from limerick.

  2. Limerick city • Limerick is the 4th most populated city in Ireland. • Limerick is also known as the Shannon region. • The city is built on several curves and islands of the River Shannon ,which spreads into an estuary shortly down river from limerick.

  3. Facts on Limerick • Limerick have a population of 57,106. • Limerick is in the province of Munster. • It is located at a strategic position on the River Shannon with 4 main crossing points near the city centre. • St. Johns Cathedral, whilst more modern, as Irelands tallest spire at 94 metres.

More facts on Limerick • The milk market is the main market in Limerick. • To the south of the city is Golden Vale, an area of rich pastureland. • Local Public transport is provided by Bus Éireann. • Limerick is an important centre of higher education in Ireland. • The Shannon airport is also in Limerick.

  5. Sport • Rugby and GAA (gaelic football and hurling) are the most popular sports in Limerick. • Thomand Park is a famous sports ground especially rugby in Limerick. • UL is a main university in Limerick and has many sports grounds.

History of Limerick • During the Munster Plantation Limerick was ruled by the Fitzgeralds and the Butlers. • A great castle was built on the orders of King John in 1200 in Limerick. • Luimneach (Limerick) originally referred to the general area along the banks of the Shannon Estuary, which was known as Loch Luimnigh.
