  1. Lesson 41Visualizing Setting Goals Review characterization in Chapter 1 Analyze a passage for diction and imagery Develop an interpretive statement about the effect of setting

  2. “Save the Last Word for Me” • Looking back over what you read in Chapter 1, you are now going to focus on different quotations that stand out. • Break up into groups of 3-4!

  3. Using Two Notecards • On one side, write a quotation from chapter 1 of TKAM that stood out to you or was interesting • On the other side, write why you chose this quotation

  4. Share Out • Have each group member share the quotes and why they were chosen • Discuss as a group what patterns you notice in the quotes, or what they say about characters

  5. TKAM Packet – Character Chart • Based on the quotations you and your group members discuss, add some characterization notes to the characters identified • What beginning ideas and descriptions are we the readers given?

  6. SpringBoard Page 368 • Activity 5.11 Visualizing Setting • Review: Imagery and Diction • You will need the following: • TKAM Packet (Vocab Section) • Highlighters

  7. Maycomb, Alabama • Follow along in the excerpt from chapter 1 • While we read, highlight images and words (especially adjectives and verbs) that create a VIVID PICTURE of the town • Think about what effect the author wants to create in this description of the town—what should the reader take away from this description?

  8. Fill in as a class and individually… • Page 369 Questions • Interpretive Statement: can be used as topic sentences because it presents a claim about a specific topic

  9. Class Read • Chapters 2 and 3 of TKAM • Keep out TKAM packet and make notes on characterization • On a separate sheet of paper, write down/take notes of the following: • Questions you have about the story • Words you don’t know HMK: Chapters 4 & 5
