History of Tattoos

  • The word tattoo is said to have come from the Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means “striking something” and the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means ‘to mark something’

Egypt

  • Mummies have been found as late back as the 4th dynasty with tattoos

  • Women ritualistic tattoos

  • Thought to be the origin


Northern Europe

  • The tattoos shown to the right were found on a 5000 year old ice man in Northern Europe

  • There were over 57 tattoos found on his body


Celts

  • Celtic culture was full of body art

  • Symbolize the connection of all life

  • Used the process called woading


Thailand

  • Thais believe women do not need the extra boost as they are already strong enough on their own
