  3. Recent Explosion of Sites and Tools Over 250 Chat options alone Social Media Options

  4. Most Common Student Platforms • Kik • Snapchat • Ask-FM • Instagram • Twitter • Facebook • Chatroulette • Rounds • Whatsapp

  5. KIK • Kik is a free texting app used by more than 50 million people and enables users to connect with strangers. Although it is for people aged 17 and older, experts say children aged 11-15 are the main users. • The app can be installed on iPod Touch and iPad devices as well as smartphones. Instead of using phone numbers or real names to contact each other, each Kik member has a user name. Conversations and images cannot be viewed publicly, which makes it much harder for parents to monitor Kik than Facebook or Twitter.

  6. Snapchat • Snapchat : A free photo sharing app for sending text photos. Users (12yrs+) set the pictures to delete after a few seconds or minutes. • Snapchat can easily be used for sexting, but because it’s simple to do a screen capture on phones, photos can be copied and shared on various platforms. No parental controls.

  7. Ask-fm • Ask.fm is a 3-year-old question-and-answer app that's wracked up 57 million users and is adding members at a rate of 200,000 a day. • Users remain anonymous when asking other users a question. Implications for harassment and bullying.

  8. Trust/Talk/Test • Establish Trust : Talk with and share with your children about how you are using social media, and your expectations for their use of tools. Social media provides instantaneous opportunities to interact and communicate on a global platform. Adolescents need us to help navigate the terrain and waters appropriately. Establishing core beliefs about social media as a family can ground our children to make the right decision when negative courses arise.  • Walk the Talk : Use it for positive things. Use it for gaining knowledge, for enhancing your horizons (classes, developments in the your chosen fields, time management). Take the time to follow up with your children about their use and friends. • Enforce the MOM Test : Would I do the same things in front of family and friends? If not, don’t hit the “return” key or send that text!
