  2. BLACK HOLES • A black hole sucks in everything from spacejunk to Light • Black Holes of stellar mass are expected to to form when heavy stars collapse in a supernova at the end of their life cycle • Objects whose gravity field is too strong for light to escape were first considered in the 18th century

  3. BLACK HOLES • After a Black hole has formed it can continue to grow by adsorbing mass from it’s surroundings. • By absorbing other stars and merging with other Black holes supermassive Black holes of millions of solar masses may be formed • The defining feature of a black hole is the appearance of an event horizon—a boundary in spacetime through which matter and light can only pass inward towards the mass of the black hole.

  4. BLACK HOLES • A supermassive Black hole is the largest type of blackhole in a Galaxy • In the order of hundreds of thousands of bllions of solar masses • Most and possibly all Galaxys including the milkyway ( our Galaxy ) are belived to hold supermassive black holes at their centers • The simplest black holes have mass but neither electric charge nor angular momentum. These black holes are often referred to as Schwarzschild black holes after Karl Schwarzschild who discovered this solution in 1916

  5. BLACK HOLES • “Black holes are the evolutionary endpoints of stars at least 10 to 15 times as massive as the Sun.”(http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/know_l2/black_holes.htm) • “There are many popular myths concerning black holes, many of them perpetuated by Hollywood” (http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/know_l2/black_holes.html) • Some of the myths are “time-traveling tunnels to another dimension, cosmic vacuum cleaners sucking up everything in sight”(http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/know_l2/black_holes.html)

  6. Supermassiveblackhole • The average density of a supermassive black hole can be much less than the density of water for very large black holes • There are stellar-mass black holes, generated from collapsing stars, which range up to perhaps 33 solar masses • The minimal supermassive black hole is in the range of a hundred thousand solar masses.
