  2. Schedule • Course outcomes • My thoughts and recommendations • Peer Review/Feedback on last assignment • Portfolio Template • Questions

  3. Course Learning Outcomes • Annotation • Close Reading • Summary • Inquiry • Present your work

  4. My Thoughts • Annotation—make sure you have clear examples of good annotations: thoughtful markings, notes on side, important passages underlined or starred. You can also include the annotations you are making for this last assignment.

  5. My thoughts, cont. • Close Reading—make sure to include specific details, examples, language, and imagery. Don’t write around the text “This was good…it shows a lot of things…everything is about the future…technology is present in the book…this was negative or positive…”. Instead, grab language, discuss particular scenes, give examples, and utilize imagery.

  6. My thoughts, cont. • Summary— • Introduce story topic and/or story idea in one line • Introduce any specific characters that we need to know. • Introduce a few supporting ideas for that topic or plot points that are important. • Locate any overarching themes or symbols that are important.

  7. Example Summary • In the story “The Last Night of the World,” a husband and wife realize that tonight will be the last night that the world will exist. At first, they are uncertain how to face the inevitable termination of life. They try to make sense out of what the situation means or how humanity has arrived at this point, but they realize that these questions are pointless. They acknowledge there is no logic to the end of the world. They discuss what they should do and realize that the only thing they can do is what they know: “go to a show, listen to the radio, watch television, play cards, put the children to bed…”(139). In the last scene, the parents express their exhaustion and go to bed…as they always do. • One of the major themes in this story is the idea of relationships in the midst of conflict. …etc.

  8. My Thoughts, cont. • Inquiry—Make sure to continually revise your questions for clarity and refinement of language. • Present your work—organized collection of work. Thoughtful reflection piece highlighting important turning points or moments in your process of close reading.

  9. Quick Tips • Quick Tip Sheet: • MLA titles: “The Man” in The Illustrated Man • Author’s name: Ray Bradbury • Include page numbers for citation: “Blah blah blah quote”(13). The story blah blah blah summary of scene (14). • DO NOT PLAGARIZE! Or “borrow” content without properly citing.

  10. Essay Template • Introduction • Section 1 • Section 2 • Possible section 3 • Conclusion

  11. Peer Review • Clear theme (Comments, feedback) • Clear question (Comments, feedback) • Clear summaries (comments, feedback) • Clear analysis or answer to question for each story (comments, feedback) • Conclusion
