  1. Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) presented by Johannes Schmetzon behalf of Ernst Koenemann, Director of Programme Development EUMETSAT

  2. MTG to Secure Continuity of EUMETSAT Services 2015 / 2017 2002 1977 MOP/MTP MTG-I and MTG-S MSG • 1observation mission: • MVIRI: 3 channels • Spinningsatellite • 800 kg • 3 observation missions: • SEVIRI: 12 channels • GERB • Rapid Scanning (~2008) • Spinning satellite • Class 2-ton x15 • 4 observation missions: • Full disc imaging (16 channels) • High resolution imag (4 channels) • Infra-Red Sounder • - Lightning Imager • 3-axis stabilised satellites • Class 3-ton x20 ... 30 years of continuous operations ... Chemistry UVN Mission embarked on MTG-S provided via GMES Segment 2

  3. Three generation of Mereosat imagers:From ‘MVIRI’ over ‘SEVIRI’ to ‘FCI’ on MTG 1=VIS0.6 2=WV6.2 3=IR10.8 12=HRV

  4. Three generation of Mereosat imagers:From ‘MVIRI’ over ‘SEVIRI’ to ‘FCI’ on MTG 12=HRV 1=VIS0.6 2=VIS0.8 3=NIR1.6 4=IR3.8 5=WV6.2 6=WV7.3 7=IR8.7 8=IR9.7 9=IR10.8 10=IR12.0 11=IR13.4

  5. Three generation of Mereosat imagers:From ‘MVIRI’ over ‘SEVIRI’ to ‘FCI’ on MTG 1=VIS0.4 2=VIS0.5 3=VIS0.6 4=VIS0.8 7=NIR1.6 5=NIR0.9 6=NIR1.3 8=NIR2.2 9=IR3.8 10=WV6.2 11=WV7.3 12=IR8.7 13=IR9.7 14=IR10.5 15=IR12.3 16=IR13.3

  6. High Spatial/Temporal Resolution->Monitoring Mesoscale Features Monitoring of Meso-scale Features NOAA AVHRR RGB Image, 27 June 2001,showing Severe Thunderstorms over the Alps and S. Germany

  7. MTG-IRS will detect ‘moisture flow’ H2O(p) CO T(p) Sfc O3 Sfc 700 – 1210 cm-1 1600 – 2175 cm-1 Temp (CO2) Surface, Clouds Surface, Clouds Surface, Clouds CO O3 N2O, Temp (CO2) H2O, CH4, N2O Temp (CO2) MTG-IRS mission give new information on horizontal and vertical gradients of moisture, wind and temperature => between radiosondes and the hyperspectral soundings from the polar satellites.

  8. The MTG Lightning Imager (LI) Blitze km²/Jahr The LI on MTG measures Total Lightning: Cloud-to-Cloud Lightning (IC) and Cloud-to-Ground Lightning (CG) Development of active convective areas => Intensity and movement Monitoring of storm lifecycle Validation of convective initiation forecast

  9. MTG-S will accommodate the GMES Sentinel 4mission ‘Ultraviolet Visible Near-Infrared (UVN)’ • The UVN will focus on the European countries: The Field Of Regard (FOR), projected on the Earth surface covers longitudes 10° West to 45° East and latitudes 30° North to 65° North • The UVN supports atmospheric chemistry and air quality monitoringover Europe. Products to be derived are trace gases(O3, NO2, SO2, HCHO) and aerosol (optical depth, scattering height). • The accommodation of Sentinel 4 on MTG (and Sentinel 5 on Post-EPS) was approved by Council in July 2008 • ESA coordinates with EUMETSAT the finalisation of GMES Sentinel 4 Phase 0 and the preparation for start of Phase A

  10. MTG Deployment Scenario Notional MTG In-orbit Deployment Scenario (reaching 20 years Operational Service for the Imaging Mission) MFG Meteosat Fourth Generation ….
