  1. 5. Being a Disciple in the Workplace Philippians 2: 12-18 p. 1085

  2. Being a Disciple in the Workplace • John Dickson Seminar – “Religious violence” • Debate In Australia: changed 1 person’s mind • “Think of someone you know who is a Christian – is the world a better place with them or without them?” (v 15-16) • Be someone who makes the world a better place ! • Things I have learned in recent years . . . • Witness; Orientation; Resource; Kingdom

  3. 1. Witness • Being a Witness: • Tell other people about Jesus and what He has done for them. • There is a better way to understand my God-given role in the workplace • Two lessons: • Try to let work colleagues know that I am a Christian asap. • Don’t be weird in conversation

  4. 2. Orientation • The primary purpose of our lives • Why are we here? What are we trying to do? • What are they . . . What should they be. (v 12, 13) • How do I bring God into my working life? • Tried to remember memory verses and devotional points through the day – generally unhelpful. • Rather: pay attention to what God is doing . . . • Focus: how should I be partnering with God in what He is already doing?

  5. 3. Resource • “It is God who works in you” (v 13) • God is always at work – “Experiencing God” • Temptations: • Grumbling; Arguing (v 14) • “Being poured out like a drink offering” (v 17) • “Work out your salvation” (v 12) “For . . . It is God who works in you” (v 13)

  6. 4. Kingdom • Live as “children of God” (v 15) eager to “boast on the day of Christ” (v 16) • Expanding our purpose: Be the Kingdom of God breaking into the world. Extend the Shalom of God into your workplace. • Every kindness, every good deed matters. • All the instructions in Philippians are plural. We do this in Community.

  7. Being a Disciple in the workplace • Witness – appropriate to the opportunities God creates. • Orientation – Be about God’s good purposes. • R esource – “It is God who works in you . . .” • Kingdom – Extend the Shalom of God into the world
