  1. Engage diversity and difference in practice Competency 4

  2. Characteristics Social Workers understand how diversity characterizes & shapes the human experience and is critical to the formation of identity. The dimensions of diversity are understood as the intersectionality of multiple factors including age, class, color, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity & expression, immigration status, political ideology, race, religion, sex, & sexual orientation. Social workers appreciate that, as a consequence of difference, a person’s life experiences may include oppression, poverty, marginalization, & alienation as well as privilege, power, & acclaim.

  3. First GPB Example Rich vs. Poor! Residents with money have a higher living standard. Even having that higher demand for service that does not depict how I treat these high status residents along with residents who are not as well off. Recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures & values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege & power

  4. Second GPB Example When I encounter residents who may be hard of hearing or just do not understand what I am saying I take my time to explain the information to them, speak slower, & clearly to the best of my ability! Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases & values in working with diverse groups.

  5. Third GPB Example Elderly population! Elderly individuals are not seen as human beings. They are seen as burdens, senile, difficult, pushovers. That is not the case. All the residents want is to be treated as a human being and what to know that they do have a voice within the facility/ community. Recognize & communicate their understanding of the importance of difference in shaping life experiences.

  6. Fourth GPB Example Physical therapist at SJP help assist residents regain mobility after having surgery so that they can return home and continue their daily routines independently. Speech therapist help residents who have had some form of brain injury how to communicate again. View themselves as learners & engage those with whom they work as informants.
