  3. Little Rock, Arkansas September 1957 Sept. 4th- Gov. Faubus used National Guard to block integration of school.

  4. Sept. 24th- President Eisenhower 1.) Sends in Army to escort black students to school at request of city Mayor. Army stayed all year. 2.) Federalized the Arkansas National Guard (Faubus no longer controls them)

  5. Lunch Counter Sit-Ins 1960- Greensboro, North Carolina

  6. 4 black students sit at counter even when told they will not be served. NPR Story

  7. Other sit-ins- What do you see?

  8. Talk with a partner Do you think that sit-ins were an effective form of non-violent protest? Are there any issues that you think a sit in might work for today? Would the reaction be the same as it was in the 1960s?
