  4. Ceyx and Alcyone • Separation by duty • Death of departed, followed by longing • Immortality in the form of birds • 7 days of calm during nesting – Halcyon days

  5. Pygmalion and Galatea • Falls in love with his creation • “Shaping” in relationships? • Pygmalion effect – self-fulfilling prophecy

  6. Baucis and Philemon • Piety • Fidelity to gods and each other • Rewarded for hospitality, fidelity, and piety by being changed into two trees growing as one/ immortality

  7. Endymion • Young shepherd of surpassing beauty who only sleeps on a mountainside • Selene, the moon, fell in love with him • Selene’s passion brings her her greatest pain--many sighs

  8. Daphne • Young love and marriage hating huntress • Apollo fell in love with her—she fled • She spurned his love/pursuit • Changed into a Laurel tree—its leaves would grace the victor’s brow • Unrequited love

  9. Alpheus and Arethusa • Again pursuit—Arethusa wants freedom • Turned into a stream by Artemis • Alpheus followed her/their waters mingle
