  1. Mathematics Curriculum Proposal Transitioning to Iowa Core

  2. Why Are We Changing • Common Core Standards for Mathematics adopted by Iowa July 2010 • Full implementation, grades 9-12, required by July 1, 2012 • K-8 implementation 2014-2015 • ALL STUDENTS receive core instruction

  3. Context – How does IOWA compare? A new reality is beginning to sweep across Iowa and the nation. There’s a growing understanding that big changes are going to be needed in education for Iowa students to be successful learners, earners and citizens in the 21st century. “It’s not just the rest of the nation that Iowa’s kids have to compete with now. It’s the rest of the world,”said Iowa’s incoming director of education, Jason Glass..” SAI Report, February 2011, p. 1

  4. Continuum of Curriculum Support • Iowa Core/Common Core • Sequence • Priorities • Text/Material Alignment

  5. Continuum of Curriculum Support • Course • Unit • Skill • Other

  6. What About Testing • New ITBS and ITED for Fall 2011 • Mathematics aligned with Domains of Common Core • 2 sections with mixture of problems More information coming… Iowa Testing Service is scheduling informational meetings in May.

  7. Continuum of Curriculum Support TRANSLATION INTO ACTION • Tools (e.g. common templates, processes) • Products (collaboratively produced, stored, shared )

  8. Continuum of Curriculum Support TRANSLATION INTO ACTION • Pedagogy (e.g. integrated with course, unit and lesson development and implementation) • Differentiation(e.g. G/T, Special Education etc.)

  9. Continuum of Curriculum Support • Collaborative Teams • Facilitation • Coaching • RTI2 = Response to Instruction and Intervention TRANSLATION INTO ACTION

  10. Significant Advancement of Some Topics to Earlier Grades Iowa (Common) Core Grade Level Placement for Algebra I Content Current Grade Level Placement for Algebra I Content

  11. Integrated or Traditional Course Pathways 9th Gr. Math or CC Algebra I 10th Gr. Math or Geometry 11th Gr. Math or Algebra II 12th Gr. Math or Pre Calculus, Cal 2nd Gr. Math 6th Gr. Math 1st Gr. Math Kdg. Math 3rd Gr. Math 5th Gr. Math 7th Gr. Math 8th Gr. Math 4th Gr. Math

  12. Implications of Common Core The work will begin here where the largest shift in content needs to be addressed. Work in K-5 and 10-12 will follow 9th Gr. Math or CC Algebra I 10th Gr. Math or Geometry 11th Gr. Math or Algebra II 12th Gr. Math or Pre Calculus, Cal 2nd Gr. Math 6th Gr. Math 1st Gr. Math Kdg. Math 3rd Gr. Math 5th Gr. Math 7th Gr. Math 8th Gr. Math 4th Gr. Math

  13. The Challenges …What? The Math Common Core includes: • Some content at different grade levels • Some mathematical language that may be new or unfamiliar to teachers • Mastery vs. Spiral • Significant advancement of some topics to earlier grades. • Content not repeated • Tracking eliminated except acceleration • Success the first time • Students expected to advance in mathematics • Teachers will need opportunities to study, discuss, and plan for the changes included in the Core. • Students will need support during transition

  14. The Challenges…So What? • Do most 7th graders have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills required to successfully master the new 8th math standards (formerly Algebra I content)? • Do most 8th graders have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills required to successfully master the new 9th grade math standards? • Are most teachers familiar with and/or ready to teach the new 7th, 8th, and 9th grade math standards successfully to all students?

  15. The Challenges…So What? Since the answers to these questions are NO then a transition plan needs to be developed to bridge the skill and knowledge gap to more readily ensure student and teacher success.

  16. How Do We Proceed? • Option 1 – Cognitive Tutor • Option 2 - Design Units to Meet Common Core • Option 3 – EdTech Grant

  17. Option 1: Cognitive Tutor Software Screenshot Sample Text

  18. Option 1 Cognitive Tutor • Information Sheets • Applications Due April 30 • Initial Training July 18-21, 2011, Nov. 7-8, 2011 and April 25, 2012 • Student assessment review meetings quarterly • Coaching support throughout the year

  19. Currently, AEA9 districts utilizing Cognitive Tutor implement with great variance. Recommendations by Carnegie Learning: • 50 hours of computer time (practice) • Mixed ability classrooms • Collaborative learning emphasis

  20. E2T2 Support of Cognitive Tutor for 2011-12 School Year • Implement both classroom and software components with fidelity Dates for training • July 18-21, 2011 • Nov. 7-8, 2011 • April 25, 2012 • Coaching and Quarterly Data Meetings

  21. Questions

  22. Option 2:Design Units to Meet Common Core

  23. Dates 7th Grade Teachers expected to attend: • June 27-30, 2011 • July 11- 14, 2011 • Oct. 17-18, 2011 • April 9-10, 2012 Coaching support throughout the year Option of additional transition topic workshops

  24. What Will It Look Like • Scope and Sequence • Unpack the Standards – write learning targets • Identify Gaps • Create Transition Lessons • Utilize Practice Standards • Teaching through Inquiry and CRA model • Reaching struggling learners • Assessment

  25. Questions

  26. Option 3 – EdTech Grant • Digital course content aligned to Iowa Core in multiple content areas will be available in the fall, notification of opportunity March. • Support for one to one schools • Participation requires commitment to • Use of materials/course work • Use of blended delivery • Participation in a Community of Practice • Training April 26-27, 2011http://www.infed.org/biblio/communities_of_practice.htm • Strong recommendation to take two online courses to learn how to teach online prior to fall FY2011. • Course titles • Technology for Online/Blended Learning         • Facilitating Online/Blended Learning • Buck Institute for Project Based Learning– Implementing Social Studies Teachers • June 22-24, 2011 in Coralville  and June 28-30, 2011 in Adel  These sessions will target implementing Social Studies teachershttp://www.bie.org/

  27. Additional Opportunities • April 18, 2011 from 8:30 – 11:30 AM • April 27, 2011 from 8:30 – 11:30 AM
