  4. The main characters Timotheus von Bock- he is the main character of the story although referred as a third person by his brother in law Jacob Mättik- the brother in law of Timotheus, also the narrator of the story Eeva von Bock- Timotheus' wife, the sister of Jacob

  5. The book The story takes place in the beginning of the 19th century. Aristocrat Timotheus marries a peasant girl Eeva to prve that good men are equal before nature, god and ideals. He writes a letter to the Czar, criticizing the way in which his family runs the country. His open mindness is enough to bring accusations of "insanity". He is inprisoned for 9 years as a traitor and later released into house arrest because of his "madness".

  6. The main point The main issues discussed are: Is Timotheus really mad? Is it madness, offering one's opinion? Was Timotheus mad for not fleeing his house arrest? All those questions and more are discussed in the novel by Jacob, in diary form
