  1. Prehistoric Natives in Texas • Prehistory is the time BEFORE recorded history. This means, before people could write. • The first natives were hunter gatherers. How did they get food? • Europeans provided the first history in North America. • Native Americans did leave EVIDENCE of their existence though, through artifacts. What are some examples of artifacts?

  2. Prehistoric Natives in Texas • These people arrived in North America by a land bridge. • It was between Alaska and Russia. • What is a pictograph? (write the answer) • What is a petroglyph? (write the answer) • Who is an archeologist? (write the answer) • There are three main time periods of Prehistory in Texas: Prehistoric, Archaic, and late Prehistoric.

  3. Prehistoric Natives in Texas • Prehistoric period was up until 6000 BC. • These people were NOMADIC, which means they moved from place to place. • They hunted with flint tipped spears. • Also drove herds off cliffs and into swamps. • Ate Pemmican – dried meat, berries, and animal fat.

Prehistoric Natives in Texas • Archaic period refers to 6000 BC to 700 AD. • A climate change (making it warmer) allowed people to develop new food sources. • These people developed many tools, like the atlatl. • They traveled in bands. What is a band? Hint – it’s not Taylor Swift. • Periodically they would come together to hunt larger sources of food.

How? Why? • There were several main types of Indians in Texas by this time: Southeastern, Plains, Gulf Coast, and Puebloan.
