  1. Weed Management

  2. Weed Management Tools • Rotation • Fast, uniform growing crop • Cultivation • Herbicides

  3. Herbicide Usage

  4. Prowl 3.3E • Common name: Pendimethalin, • Dinitroaniline, prevents separation of chromosomes during mitosis • similar to Balan, Surflan, Treflan, Prime + • Rate: 1.8 - 2.4 pts (1.5 pts) • Application: PPI and Layby (directed) • should be incorporated for max. control • annual broadleaf weeds and grasses

  5. Prowl 3.3E • Can cause injury to tobacco • Stunted and club-like roots • more of a problem on sandy soils • poor incorporation • high rate • If used with Spartan: Prowl PPI, Spartan PRE-T

  6. Poast 1.5EC • Common name: Sethoxydim, BASF • Inhibits ACCase, blocks building of new membranes • similar to Select and Achieve • Rate: 1-1.5 pts • 2 pts crop oil or 1 pt DASH • Application: POST over-top • 42 d prior to harvest • Annual and perennial grass control

  7. Poast 1.5EC • Applied to actively growing weeds • Up to 42 before harvest • One of two remedial control herbicides labeled on tobacco • Phyto possible on tender tobacco because of adjuvant

  8. Tillam 6E • Common name: Pebulate • Thiocarbamate, inhibits biosynthesis of lipids, proteins, fatty acids, etc. • weeds fail to emerge • similar to Sutan, Bolero, Vernam • Rate: 2.7 qts • Application: PPI • annual grasses, some broadleaf weeds • some nutsedge suppression

  9. Tillam 6E • Breakdown in control (grasses) during the season is not unusual • Can cause stunting • uneven growth, restricted root growth

  10. Devrinol 50DF • Common name: Napropramide • Acetamide: Inhibits cell division • somewhat similar to Lasso, Frontier, and Dual • Rate: 2 - 4 lbs • Application: PPI, POST-OT and Layby • annual grasses and some broadleaf weeds • Rotation restriction with small grain

  11. Devrinol 50DF • Breakdown in control (grasses) during the season is not unusual • Can cause stunting • uneven growth, restricted root growth

  12. Command 3ME • Common Name: Command, FMC • Carotenoid Biosynthesis Inhibitor, weeds emerge, but are bleached white and die within several days • Loosely similar to Zorial, Sonar and Amitrol • Rate: 2 - 2.67 pts • Application Timing: PRE-T, PPI, and POST-T (overtop within 7 days) • Annual broadleaf and grass weeds

  13. Command3ME • Rotation restrictions: • 12 months for small grains and vegetables • High drift potential • Do not apply: • Winds over 10 mph • Over 30 PSI • Within 1,200 ft of non-target sensitive plants • ornamentals, vegetables etc.

  14. Aim Shielded or Hooded Spray Prior to Layby Directed After First Harvest Some small broadleaf weeds Pigweed and Morningglory Common Name: Carfentrazone PROTOX Inhibitor, Cell membranes leak

  15. Spartan 4F • Common name: Spartan, FMC • Aryl Triazinone, PROTOX inhibitor, cell membranes begin to leak • similar to Blazer, Reflex and Goal • Rate: 8.0 - 12.0 ounces • Application: PRE-T and PPI • Broadleaf weeds and sedges • some grass suppression

  16. Spartan 4F • 18 month rotation restriction on cotton • For adequate grass control, grass herbicide must also be used • Can cause stunting especially when incorporated • Weed control reduced from PRE-T in dry years • “Reach-back” potential is high

  17. Distribution of Cotton and Tobacco Acreage Cotton Tobacco

  18. Spartan • Can be applied PPI or PRE-T • PPI • Can injure tobacco • PRE-T • Not convenient for growers

  19. Spartan Charge • Aim/Spartan PreMix • No need for Aim Pre Tobacco Production • Check the label for equivalent rates of Spartan 4F

  20. Aminopyralid • Forefront • Milestone • Auxin Mimic • Drift • Carryover

  21. Ignite(1/32nd full rate)

  22. Ignite (1/16th full rate)
