Introduction • Mission: The goal of the LCTL Program is to help advance the teaching and learning of LCTLs by: -encouraging people to study LCTLs by increasing awareness of course offerings and implementing curricular changes to improve the overall quality of the language programs, -assisting LCTL teachers in developing high-quality teaching materials to ensure quality of instruction, -helping LCTL teachers cooperate and communicate. • Vision: Become the preeminent Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTL) program in North America. • Director: ErcanBalcı • GA: Tatiana Luchkina Website: www.lctl.linguistics.illinois.edu

  4. Languages • Arabic (ARAB) is spoken across a wide area in North Africa and the Middle East. We offer courses in Arabic at beginning through advanced levels; degree offerings include an undergraduate Minor in Arabic Studies. • Director/Coordinator: Dr. Eman Saadah

  5. Hindi/Urdu (HNDI) is spoken by several hundred million people in South Asia. We offer Hindi courses at beginning through advanced levels; degree offerings include an undergraduate Minor in Hindi Studies. • Director/Coordinator: Dr. Mithilesh Mishra

  6. Modern Greek (GRKM) is spoken in Greece, Cyprus, and smaller communities throughout the world. We offer courses in Greek at beginning through advanced levels. • Director/Coordinator: Dr. Stefanos Katsikas

  7. Persian (PERS), or Farsi, is spoken throughout Iran and in portions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. We offer courses in Persian at beginning and intermediate levels. • Director/Coordinator: Dr. Aazam Feiz

  8. Swahili (SWAH) is a major language of East Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia and the Congo. We offer courses in Swahili at beginning through advanced levels; study in Swahili may form part of the undergraduate Minor in Sub-Saharan African Languages. • Director/Coordinator: Dr. Kristina Riedel

  9. Turkish (TURK) is spoken in Turkey and Cyprus, with closely related languages spoken across central Asia. We offer courses in Turkish at beginning through advanced levels. • Director/Coordinator: Dr. Ercan Balcı

  10. Wolof (WLOF) is a major language of Senegal and Mauritania. We are offering Wolof at the intermediate level this semester; study in Wolof may form part of the undergraduate Minor in Sub-Saharan African Languages. • Coordinator:Dr.Kristina Riedel

FLAS • Center for Global Studies : Arabic, Greek, Hindi, Persian, Swahili, Turkish • European Union Center : Arabic, Greek (modern), or Turkish. *Priority will be given to less-commonly-taught languages (languages other than French, German, Spanish) and higher-level language study. • Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center : Turkish • FLAS application will be available on-line through this Web site in October, 2013. Graduate student applications are submitted by the student’s department; All applications are due in February 2014.

SILMW-2014 • Summer Institute for the Languages of the Muslim World 2014 • SILMW is offering intensive courses in a variety of Muslim world languages, including Arabic,Persian, Swahili, Turkish, Wolof and Urdu. • http://silmw.linguistics.uiuc.edu/SILMW provides a unique opportunity to explore the languages and cultures of the Muslim World and interact with experts in this region. • Director: Dr. Ercan Balcı
