  3. Aim of Project • Design an instrument to measure the strength of the fingers Objectives • To diagnose hand injuries and muscle disorders in hand • To help the doctor in diagnosis of disease • To help patient Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

  4. Why ???? Diagnose CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME CTS (A neurological disorder) • Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common nerve compression disorder of the upper extremity. This process affects 1 percent of the general population and 5 percent of the working population who must undergo repetitive use of their hands and wrists in daily living. • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly two-thirds of all occupational illnesses reported, were caused by exposure to repeated trauma to workers upper body ( the wrist, elbow or shoulder ). One common example of such an injury is carpal tunnel syndrome. Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

  5. What is CTS?? • Carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve -- the nerve in the wrist that supplies feeling and movement to parts of the hand. It can lead to numbness, tingling, weakness, or muscle damage in the hand and fingers. Symptoms • Weak grip or difficulty carrying bags (a common complaint) • Weakness in one or both hands • Numbness or tingling in the thumb and next two or three fingers of one or both hands • Numbness or tingling of the palm of the hand • Pain extending to the elbow • Pain in wrist or hand in one or both hands • Problems with fine finger movements (coordination) in one or both hands • Wasting away of the muscle under the thumb (in advanced or long-term cases) • (ref:- http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000433.htm) Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

Some Statistics - disorder affecting 7% of population - 14% of physician visits and 19% of hospital stays. 62% of the persons with musculoskeletal disorders report some degree of limitation on activity - according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. - Presently, 25% of all computer operators have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, 50% of the entire workforce may be affected. Working…. • Switch on power supply • Place finger in loop • Immobilize rest of the fingers (to prevent force exerted by rest of the finger) • Patient will ask to lift the finger • LCD will show the force values • Finalize the maximum value • It will be compared with the pre set values • If any abnormality alarm will be there • Several switches are provided to set the values Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

  11. Result • Found the strength of finger • Survey was conducted in Sahrdaya College of Engineering & Technology and in a hospital • Patients whose finger strength is below 1000 mN was found to be defective Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

Advantage • Easy to measure finger strength and to diagnose problems in finger • Helpful for doctors in quantizing the data of patients who found to be defective • Can record for future reference • Users can set the detection limit • Helpful for patients (can check the strength by themselves there by preventing continuous consultation) • Check the improvement after medication • Complete patient isolation board Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

  13. Disadvantages • Need little manual effort to find the strength • No inbuilt storage capacity • Max force can be applied is 6000mN • Presently no comparison set is included • Need little more research Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

  14. Marketing strategies • Presently no such equipment in market • Cost is very less • Affordable for common man • Doctors preferring such type of equipment • Manufacturing is simple • More facilities can be included Sahrdaya college of engg & Tech

Future plans • Memory chart system have to be set for future reference • Perfect immobilizers have to be made • Ergonomics of the system to be made user friendly • Chart printer has to be made • Planning to give prescriptions along with the check up, so patients can practice it.
