  2. Mission • “The mission of NMHS is to build a community with the common goal of becoming productive, conscientious, global citizens. Our mission is to uphold rigorous academic standards with opportunities to develop intercultural understanding, through inquiry and experience, in order to encourage lifelong learning.”

  3. Vision • Through an on-going intensive review of each student’s successes and failures as related to mastering content objectives, it is our goal to provide an educational environment where all students are afforded equal opportunities to be successful in their quest of knowledge. This will be provided through rigorous instruction, continuous assessment and prescribed interventions focused on the individual needs of each student.

  4. Demographic Data • North Meck has seen a large shift in the demographics of students over the past four years • The percent of free and reduced lunch students has more than doubled in four years • The student population has decreased by over 500 in four years • The white population has decreased almost 40% in four years • The African American population has grown over 30% in four years

Academic Achievement Data -North Meck has seen a steady increase in physical science and US History scores over the past four years -Fluctuations in test scores can be linked to change in administration and demographics of student population. There has also been an 18% turnover rate of staff within the past two years Percentage of students’ scores at or above grade level

Academic Achievement Data -North Meck has improved the percentage of students meeting growth in all three areas listed. -High growth ratios have been achieved in Algebra I, Biology, and English I -The school vision has placed an emphasis on student growth for ALL students through the Student Success Model and Enrichment block provided during the school day -Staff, students, and parents are becoming more informed about academic progress and needs of each individual student

Retention Data • The data from 2011-2012 school year shows a significant decrease in the number of students retained. • Research says that retention in high school significantly increases the likelihood of dropout. • The ninth-grade retention rate was cut by more than half in the past year. • The eleventh-grade retention rate was cute by more than half in the past year.

  8. Perception Data • Teacher Concerns based on the NC Teacher Working Conditions Initiative: • Class sizes are unreasonable so teachers do not have the time to meet the needs of all students • Parents/Guardians are not influential decision makers in the school • Students do not follow rules of conduct • School administrators do not consistently enforce school rules

Perception Data • Teacher Concerns based on the NC Teacher Working Conditions Initiative: • Teachers do not have an appropriate level of influence in school decision making • There is not an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect in the school • There is not enough follow-up from professional development • Teachers do not feel comfortable raising issues that are of concern to them

Recommendations • Task force of parents/guardians, teachers, and students to meet monthly with administration to address concerns or questions • Current discipline task force led by teachers will review teacher survey results concerning student discipline and develop a plan for the upcoming year to address concerns • Principal will hold monthly meetings with teachers from each building to answer questions, discuss any concerns • Principal will attend content and grade-level/cohort planning meetings during the day to actively participate in planning and answer questions

  11. Recommendations • North Meck will hold a Back to School Cookout on Monday, Aug. 20 after the teacher workday. Staff members are encouraged to attend and build community with one another • Students will attend a Back to School Bash on Aug. 26 at the school. There will be course/schedule information and opportunities for campus beautification. Food will be provided • Viking Saturdays will be held throughout the year for teachers, parents, and students to come together and work to keep the campus looking nice, build community, and provide support to one another in needed ways • Continuation of the student objective mastery learning with the built-in Enrichment/Student Success model weekly
