  1. Emily Brontë By Charlotte Heard

Childhood… • Emily Brontë was born on the 30th of July 1818 in Thornton, near Bradford in Yorkshire, to Maria Branwell and Patrick Brontë. • She was the fifth of six children. • In 1821, when Emily was just three years old, her mother died of cancer. Their “Aunt Branwell” helped to look after them, and she died in 1842. • In 1824, after Emily’s youngest daughter, Anne, was born, the family moved to Haworth. Her father was appointed rector.

  3. School… • In 1824, Emily attended the newly opened Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge. • Her sisters Maria, Elizabeth and Charlotte also attended. • They suffered the harsh regime, cold and poor food. In June 1825, Emily and her sisters were finally taken away from the school for good.

  4. School… • In July 1835 she enrolled at Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head Mirfield and she returned to Haworth in October due to homesickness. • In February 1842, Charlotte and Emily went to the Pensionnat Heger at Brussels. • They learnt French, German and Music while they were there. • In November 1842, they returned to Haworth.

  5. Poems… In September 1845, Charlotte accidently discovered Emily's poems. Emily was angered by the intrusion into her private writings. Charlotte convinced her to work with her on a book of poems. In May 1846, a book of poems was published and Emily contributed 21 poems. Only two copies were sold.

  6. Influences… Emily’s father, Patrick Brontë, loved poetry, and he published several books of prose and verse and wrote to local newspapers. He influenced her to write poetry. Emily was also influenced by The Bible, William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, John Milton, Robert Burns, Walter Scott and Charlotte Brontë.

  7. Wuthering Heights… Emily wrote Wuthering Heights between December 1845 and July 1846. It was published in July 1847.

  8. Themes… The Supernatural is a theme in the book. Emily’s interest in mysticism and the paracosms (imaginary worlds) that she created when she was younger, may have influenced this theme.

  9. Themes… Wuthering Heights was met with mixed reviews when it was first published, mainly because of the narrative's harsh portrayal of mental and physical cruelty. Suffering is a theme in the book and this could have been influenced by the harsh way that Emily was treated at the Clergy Daughters' School.

  10. Themes… Foreignness is a them in the book, and Heathcliff is made to feel like an outsider. This may have been influenced by Emily’s experience at Brussels, as she may have felt like an outsider there.
