  2. Elements of Good Photography • Composition • Design • Light • Camera technique • Personal Style Our assignment will focus on composition and design.

  3. Composition and Design A photo is an image placed inside a frame. Good photography is deciding what to place inside that frame and how to arrange it. • Rule of Thirds • Balance • Angles • Lines • Shapes • Textures

  4. The Rule of Thirds • The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine braking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts.

  5. Balance (Symmetry) • Two equal parts • Creates a sense of balance with elements • Sense of equal weight

  6. Unbalanced (Asymmetrical) Composition • Artists arranges the subject matter until it looks right • Backgrounds distractions unwanted

  7. Line as an Element of Photographs • A line is long relative to its width. It can define a space , create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume.

  8. Shape as an Element of Photography • Geometric shapes-circles , rectangles, squares , triangles and so on –have the clear edges one achieves when using tools to create such shapes • Organic shapes have natural , less well-defined edges (think : an amoeba , or a cloud)

  9. Texture as an Element of Photographs • Texture, another element of art , is used to describe either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual “feel” of a two-dimensional work.

  10. Perspective as an Element of Photography • Point from which the subject is viewed • Establishes emphasis • Move closer , move back , move up, down
