Brief History of the Western Orthopaedic Association • First association efforts on the West Coast began with Orthopaedic clubs in Los Angeles and San Francisco after World War I; the first joint meeting between the clubs took place in 1922. • First formal Association meeting was held in 1932, with James F. Watkins of San Francisco as the first president. • Function of WOA was interrupted by World War II; the efforts of Alfred E. Gallant of Los Angeles created a resurgence of the Association. • Today, WOA has over 1,400 members in 14 states and continues to grow, maintaining a dedication to education and professional development, promotion of collegiality among members and their families and influencing health policy on behalf of WOA members and orthopaedic patients.
