Community Support • Send letters to all local businesses explaining the initiative and requesting their support. • Develop Guest Teacher bags, including a letter, referral slips and acknowledgement system tokens. The substitute teachers receive these when they check in. • Updates in school newsletter and local newspaper. • Students create newsletter that includes information on school activities, including SW-PBS • Behavior Honor Roll – newspaper picture & names

Thank you for supporting our youth. This coupon is placed in the paper and in businesses for them to fill out and send back to the school.

  8. We held a community wide meeting in May to share our progress toward our school goals. Positive Behavior Support was presented. The community was asked to offer feedback and was pleased with the goals and progress of the initiative. They voiced their concerns about the lack of respect that has been documented. Community Meeting

  9. As a result of the SWIS data, we identified that disrespect and bullying were a huge concern in our school. We brought in Jim Jelinske to speak with all K-9 students and then our staff after school.

  10. The student council planned a Cougar Traits/ Character Day. They had Ron Gustafson talk about being respectful of yourself and others, Ida Grove Supporting Players who did skits focused around our Cougar Traits, Scott McPhillips who spoke about making good choices and the local sheriff and students from the Clarinda Academy who spoke about the consequences of the law when you don’t showing good character.

  11. The elementary students decorated their doors each month with one of the Cougar Traits words. The Anita Leaders (8th grade students) with the help of the entire middle school decorated a tree at Christmas for the community winter walk. Their ornaments had what each Cougar Trait means to them.

  12. To address the issue of respecting yourself and others, all K-8 students were given the opportunity to take part in Rock and Prevention.

  13. The music department planned an entire elementary concert called Kids for Character. All the songs were based on one of the Cougar Traits. Students narrated between songs telling the audience about the Cougar Traits and the meanings of each word.

  14. Local groups, such as Kid’s Club, have also adopted the Cougar Traits as part of their curriculum.

  15. The art students worked with the visiting artist to design a mural which depicted their feelings about the Cougar Traits in one piece of art work.

  16. We feel that service learning is big part of character building and positive behavior support. All three pieces work together to assist students in becoming responsible, respect, contributing citizens.

Sustainability • Build a culture of competence. • Common Vision • Common Language • Common Experiences • Involve school personnel, youth, families, community. • Develop process to present your school’s implementation efforts to community organizations, school boards, newspaper/media, etc. • Make time to celebrate your efforts!

  18. Sustainability • Actions: • Develop and maintain school-wide handbook • Create a poster display • Create a PowerPoint presentation • Need a volunteer to share PowerPoint, poster display, or web page at next session • Plan for celebrations • Plan to “toot your own horn”
