  2. Mission Statement The mission of this project is to design and build a prototype of a velocity measurement system that does not affect the speed of the paper and can determine the velocity of an 8.5”×11” sheet of paper traveling between 250 and 750 mm/s with no more than ±0.25% error

Design Specifications and Features • Design Specifications: • Must determine the velocity of a 8.5”×11” sheet of paper • Velocity must be between 250 and 750 mm/s • No more than ±0.25% error • Simple paper path with a baffle between drive rolls • Must not affect the speed of the paper • Design Features: • Determines velocity within ±0.25% error • Keeps paper at a velocity between 250 and 750 mm/s • Simple paper path with hand fed system • Velocity correction system slows or speeds rotation of the wheels if velocity is unacceptable Estimated Cost: $35 – $40

Velocity Measurement Laser shoots from bottom of track to a light sensor on the top Sensor measures intensity Paper passes over the laser, blocking the light Sensor detects drop in intensity and timer starts Timer stops after paper passes and the intensity returns to normal Velocity is determined using distance divided by time

  14. Velocity Correction The recorded velocity is compared to the accepted values If it is within the range, the wheels remain at the same speed If it is outside the range, the wheels accelerate or decelerate accordingly Not part of the working prototype
