  1. The Kite Runner How does one survive in a society where one is not considered equal?

  2. Independent Reading • Monday’s focus question: Make a claim about a character in your book. • Monday’s learning target: I can make a claim about a character. Standard #4 Example: In The Kite Runner by KhaledHosseini, Amir is both proud and fearful of his father. • Tuesday’s focus question: Provide 1-2 pieces of evidence from your book to support the claim you made yesterday about your character. • Tuesday’s learning target: I can provide evidence to support a claim. Standard # 4 • Wednesday’s focus question: Write a sentence of analysis that explains how your evidence supports your claim. • Wednesday’s learning target: I can write a sentence of analysis. Standard #1 • Thursday’s focus question: Summarize what you read today in 1 – 2 well-developed sentences • Thursday’s learning target: I can write a concise summary. Standard #5 • Friday’s journal: Write about a belief you have. What is something you KNOW to be true because you have experience or evidence to prove it? For example, I believe that family will always be there for you. What is something you believe? Why do you believe it? Would the main character in your novel be able to say this too? • Friday’s learning target: I can articulate a belief I have and support it with examples. Standard 7 Are you on track to finish your independent reading book in 3 weeks?

  3. Example of Claim/evidence/Analysis Statements • Claim: I InThe Kite Runner, Amir is jealous of Hassan’s relationship with Ali. • Evidence: On the night the bombs started going off and Afghanistan came under attack, Hassan was crying. Ali pulls him close and clutches him with tenderness. The author says that Amir has to tell himself that he hadn’t felt envious of Hassan. • Analysis: Amir longs for the loving relationship that Hassan and Ali have. He feels Baba is ashamed of him because he is not athletic and doesn’t take up for himself in fights. He also feels Baba resents Amir because his mother died giving birth to him.

  4. Claims are judgment statements. They are: • Debatable • Amir feels responsible for the death of his mother who died while giving birth to him. • Amir’s mother died right after he was born. • Supportable Evidence statements are: • Specific and detailed • Relevant to the claim
