  1. Katie Furr PowerPoint Tutorial Grade: 2 Domain: Measurement and Data Cluster: Represent and interpret data. Standards: 10. Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

  2. Math Topic • The students are learning about bar graphs! • We have done picture bar graphs in class using their shoes, jackets, and themselves. We used gender and color to determine how to sort them. • Watch this BrainPop video with your kiddo. Feel free to do the quizzes and activities after watching!

  3. Activity Sort 10 objects with your child. Focus on 2-5 different categories for that object. Cereal (for example, 3 different kinds of cereal to sort.) Trucks crayons Candy Anything that they are interested in! Create a tally chart to show the total number of objects for each category. Line them up according to your sorting to create a bar graph. Now transfer the information and create the same bar graph on paper.

  4. Activity • Using the same bar graph just created, ask your kiddo higher level thinking questions like: • Which has the most? • Which has the least? • If I add one or more to this category, • how many will there be? • Will it have more or less? • Does it have the most now? • How could we show the changes on the bar graph? • How else could our bar graph change?

  5. Activity • Now have your child start a tally using the same category you used before. Have your kiddo ask people which is their favorite. • Have your child create a bar graph using the information he/she collected.

  6. Continue the Fun! • To continue the graphing fun, I have included some games and websites that will teach your kiddo more about bar graphs.
