  1. Am Lit Week 5 Team RQ or Team WT Get index cards!! Permission Slips

  2. Am Lit DO NOW: 2/10/24 • Using the credibility checklist: rate this sample source • http://www.hightimes.com/read/10-reasons-marijuana-should-be-legal • Write your name and your Research Question/Working Thesis on a separate sheet of paper and turn in (Not the Do Now- librarian is going to cater her presentation to exactly what you are looking for)

  3. Success Today Means 2/10/14 • You hone your critical thinking skills through analyzing the Do Now source • You think deeper about one source to accurately complete the spider. • You find at least THREE credible sources Permission Slips

  4. Steps to work Smarter today 2/10/14 • Scan/Skim possible source • Conduct Credibility Checklist • If credible, copy down “Source Information” • Source Info= • Author’s last name, first name • “Title of webpage.” • Date (day month year) • Name of sponsoring organization • Date of access (day month year) •  <Webpage address>.

  5. Am Lit DO NOW 2/11/14 • If you are working smarter, use a source your found for the DO NOW today. If you are just working harder, use the sample. • Using the template handout, organize your source information using the format they provide. DO NOT WRITE ON THE HANDOUT • “The Value of School Uniforms” • Los Angles Times • March 1st, 1996 • http://articles.latimes.com/1996-03-01/local/me-41628_1_school-districts • Chris Wysocki • LA Times.com • Viewed February 8th, 2014

  6. Success Today Means 2/11/14 • You properly format your source information into a “citation” • You create a “source card” for each credible source. • You understand the basics of the notecard research system.

  7. Why notecards? • Regular note taking works fine for small essays, arguments, assignments or lectures, but what happens when you have 50 pieces of information? How can you keep track of what fact comes from what source and be able to organize your facts by theme and not source?

  8. Notecard System= Smarter • More work at first, MUCH LESS WORK later.

  9. The Basics • Source Card: • Every credible source’s information is written on a card in MLA format (including a “hanging indent”) • Every source gets its own number 1 Elliott, Christopher. “Don’t let a natural disaster ruin your vacation.” CNN.com/travel. 2 July 2008. CNN. 10 July 2008 <http://www.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/07/ 02/natural.disasters/index.html>.

  10. HW: Create a source card for your three sources. (Each card should have a different number in the upper right corner) Permission Slips!!

  11. Am Lit: DO NOW 2/12/14 Let’s see if you can figure out the rest of the notecard system: • Here’s a fact I found in the source from yesterday’s DO NOW example: “Traveling with an emergency weather radio is key to surviving a disaster while on vacation” –Christopher Elliot • Draw a box and create a “note card” for this fact. (think about how you can show on the note card what source this piece of evidence comes from 1 Elliott, Christopher. “Don’t let a natural disaster ruin your vacation.” CNN.com/travel. 2 July 2008. CNN. 10 July 2008 <http://www.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/07/ 02/natural.disasters/index.html>.

  12. The Basics (notes continued) • Note Cards= Index cards with a SINGLE fact, quote, statistic, example, paraphrase or summary (if covering a large piece of info) • Matching source card number in upper right. So…

  13. Source card with a notecard 1 “Traveling with an emergency weather radio is key to surviving a disaster while on vacation” –Christopher Elliot 1 Overall, staying calm and finding government aids is critical to surviving a disaster while away from home

  14. Success Today Means 2/12/14 • You begin to create note cards as you build your research. • You continue to find credible sources and build source/note cards • HW: five note cards • Permission Slips!

  15. Am Lit DO NOW: 2/13/14 • Create a goal for yourself today. This goal should have a deadline of the end of class. The goal itself should be visible/measurable. • You need to have a minimum of 10 notecards (preferable from more than one source card) • HW: 10 notecards and PERMISSION SLIPS. • ** 25 notecards due Tuesday 2/18** • (Dippy ptsfor a volunteer to show his/her notecards with corresponding source card)

  16. Am Lit DO NOW 2/13/14 • Tomorrow we will have an expert help you find info about your topic. For your Do Now for today, respond to the following: • 1. Create a couple of possible questions to ask the librarian. (I would ask for “key word” help. Aka what to type in the search box. Or any other issue you might have. • 2. Today is a research day. Create an observable goal that you want to accomplish before the end of class. If we can work quietly and independently, I can come around and give “work smarter” tips to individuals

  17. Tips to work SMARTER • Copy down these websites. They will create MLA Citations for you (rarely completely accurate- BE WARNED. Double check what they create for you) • http://www.bibme.org/ • http://www.easybib.com/ • http://www.citefast.com/ • http://citationmachine.net/
