  1. Easy steps to prevent termites

  2. Millions of properties are being destroyed by termites each year in Sydney. Except few areas, almost every state has a good number of properties being destroyed by termites and similar pests, and the number gradually increases. Thus, the people of Sydney are always looking for the best method to prevent termites from harming their property.

  3. Termites can cause serious problems in any property and knowing how to prevent them is something that every homeowner should be aware of. Not protecting your home in the first instance or doing it incorrectly can encourage termites to infest your home. Termite prevention can be incredibly costly as well as being a stressful experience.

  4. Can you stop termites before a home is built? The simple answer is 'yes' although it is not always practical. At the construction stage, a Basaltic Termite Barrier (BTB) needs to lay which is effectively rock particles that are so tightly packed together termites can't penetrate them. Alternatives include installingtermite mesh or poured concrete foundations. However, all of these methods only work if no cracks or gaps are present.

  5. Can termites be prevented in existing homes? Again, this is something that is certainly possible. The best way to do this is by keeping soil to timber contact to a minimum. If at all possible you should try and ensure that only the concrete foundation comes into contact with the soil. Keeping all plants away from the perimeter of the property will also help and try to ensure that all soil around the property doesn't become overly moist. Lighting at night may also attract termites so try to keep this to a minimum as well.

  6. Is there any evidence that I should look for? You should perform regular checks looking for "carton” which are the waste materials deposited by termites. Damage to wood and mud tunnels are almost always signs of a termite infestation. If you do detect any evidence of termites it is wise to call in the termite prevention experts immediately who will help to eradicate the problem from your property.

  7. 5 ways to keep termites out 1.      Try to keep airflow around the base of the property to a maximum as this will reduce damp areas. Keeping plants at least 12 inches away from the property will also help and make it easier to discover evidence of termites. 2.      Spread pine needles rather than mulch around plants as this is far less appealing to termites. If you can't get hold of any you could consider pea gravel as an alternative. 3.      Make sure that any sprinkler system that you use is directed away from the property. As mentioned, damp attracts termites so it should always be kept to a minimum.

  8. 4.      Carrying out regular maintenance to your property will also reduce the chances of an infestation. Properties that are well maintained are far less appealing and this is the way that you want to keep it! 5.      If you have crawl spaces under your property try to keep them as well ventilated as possible. Excess moistures can also attract other insects such as beetles as well as being the source of many an unpleasant vapour.

  9. For termite prevention in Sydney, here are a few suggestions that you may like. You can wrap your building with tar paper before you install the windows. Afterwards, spray the entire structure with a power spray, which gradually penetrates deeper into the wood and naturally prevent the wood-destroying insects and fungi from destroying that structure. This solution is a borate which should be kept away from running water. If done, it will far exceed the effects of other pest control poisons and mechanical devices.

  10. Termites have a tendency of entering through cracks and cross treated wood and usually feed on wood which is not treated. All you have to do is to fill up the cracks and eradicate all rubbish from your garden which attracts the termites. If you treat your entire house just once with borate, then there will be required as this solution is persistent and stays for a long time. So, instead of killing the pests after you get affected, try to prevent termite them from the beginning.
