  1. Morality and Ethics HRE4M1 – Introduction to Unit 1

  2. What is Ethics? • From the Greek, “ethika” – having to do with good character. • Ethics is the search for the infinite good; deals with the good that humans aim for. • Answers the question, “What should you do?”

  3. Christian Ethics • Deals with the ethics of being (what we ought to be) and the ethics of doing (what we ought to do or not do). • Ethics of Being: • First goal: follow the model of Christ • Christian ethics is concerned with who we ought to be and not just the rules we are supposed to be following. • Ethics of Doing • Good acts are done by good people. • Understanding the ethics of an act requires consideration of the act itself, the intention of the person (agent), the situation of the agent

  4. What is Morality? • From the Latin “moralitas” – having to do with the customs, habits and manners that shape human life. • Morality is the human translation of the search for the good by the way we conduct ourselves in our day to day lives; deals with the way in which humans attain the good. • Answers the question, “What would you do?”

  5. Understanding Morality • Everyone has a morality. • Cultures/people operate according to their own morality. • All moralities are NOT equally beneficial to all human beings. * To develop a morality is to develop how you decide what is right or wrong. It is about acquiring a set of values and principles (good and bad) that guide choices about what kind of person you are becoming.

  6. Definitions • Moral – that which is good and maintains the dignity of the human person. • Immoral– that which is “bad” and hurts the dignity of the human person (the way not to act) • Amoral – actions that are “neutral” (neither good nor bad) OR a person who lacks sensitivity or knowledge to know what is right and wrong and acts at random (has no set of values)

  7. More Definitions • Values – the qualities, customs, standards and principles of a people, regarded as desirable (not necessarily good) • Motive/intention – the reason we do what we do • Universal Morality – those values which are generally agreed upon by all members of society • Character – the values we hold which ultimately define who we are
