  1. A few remarks on our RPC R&D proposal Bing Zhou Nov. 17,2011

  2. A little bit history • The current Small Wheels (MDT+CSC) were built, commissioned and operated by US groups • Trigger was not in the original consideration of the Small Wheel design – an unexpected mistake • One of the major argument to replace the SW is to add L1 muon trigger capability (combing the Big-Wheel L1 trigger system) • Michigan and other US groups have being working on R&D for SW upgrade in past 3-4 years. UM worked on • Field-shape tubes • Including SW MDT into L1 trigger system • Develop dedicated RPC trigger system for NSW

  3. Focus on the effort on RPC trigger development – Our proposal to USATLAS • sMDT+sRPC for NSW: the most promising NSW – robust and precision tracking and ultra- fast trigger system • Test beam results shown excellent timing and good spatial resolution as well as high rate capability • But, to meet the NSW operational requirement, still need to conduct intensive R&D – described in our proposal to USATLAS • Need to obtain USATLAS financial support to accelerate the R&D

  4. Formal Presentation of the RPC R&D status and milestones in 2012 • We would be very happy to make formal presentations to USATLAS detector R&D Review Committee and answer questions about our proposal • Such meeting should be called more than one day in advance, perhaps with written questions from the reviewers • I do not expect today’s meeting would be just challenging the proposed R&D on RPC, particularly criticize the most powerful time feature of the RPC is “overkill”. If the detector cost is not “overkill”, why not? -- see remarks from J and Tiesheng

  5. Remarks from Steve Ahlen We need to KNOW that the NSW will work, and that it will be installed on schedule. We also need to KNOW the Endcap trigger will work (including the part on the Big Wheel). If we cannot make a definitive case for any technology now, we need to redouble efforts until we can. That argues for an enhanced R&D program, not a diminished one. I believe the next 6 months are critical, and any decision before that would be premature and foolish.
