  3. Blues of the 1920’s • Spirituals sung in unison– blues sung solo • Spirituals look to God for help- blues focus on problems • Death is still a common release, but sometimes involves murder

  4. Poetry= Music“Hard Daddy” (Langston Hughes) • I went to ma daddy, • Says Daddy I have got the blues. • Lord, I went to ma daddy, • Says Daddy I have got the blues. • Ma daddy say, Honey, • Can't you bring no better news?

  8. Jazz: Origins • Origin is complex • Blues + ragtime + classical + Native American • Started in New Orleans– spread to New York and Chicago

  9. Jazz= No Rules! • Musical jam sessions- Lots of improvisation • Syncopated rhythm • Brass, percussion and woodwinds essential • Harmony and group sound important

  10. Effects of Jazz • Scatting- King Louis in Jungle Book • Jazz Clubs • Swing Dancing • Angry parents- represented immorality, blackness, sin

  11. Effect on race relations • For the first time, white teens were listening to black artists • Worsened race relations- KKK peak levels • Jazz poets- Langston Hughes

  12. The Weary Blues- Langston Hughes • Droning a drowsy syncopated tune, • Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon, • I heard a Negro play. Down on Lenox Avenue the other night • By the pale dull pallor of an old gas light He did a lazy sway . . . • He did a lazy sway . . . To the tune o' those Weary Blues.
