  2. Childhood • Born in Brooklyn, New York. August 19 1930 • Frank McCourt nearly died when he was 10 years old because of Typhoid Fever • He quit school when he was 13 years old • After he quit school, he got a small job to feed the family. • When he was 19 years old he was drafted to the US army for the Korean War

Family • His parents were Irish immigrants • His father was alcoholic, so he used all his money he earned • 3 of 7 children from the family died because of diseases • Three children’s names Malachy, Michael, and Alphonsus. • Malachy worked as a former radio host • Michael and Frank worked together and created a play called A Couple of Balguards. • He had a brother malachy McCourt who worked as a former radio host.

  4. Career • Was an Irish-American teacher • Puilitzer Prize-winning author • Received the Puliter Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award after writing his memoir Angela’s Ashes. • Some of his works were used on syllabus in high schools

Introduction to Angela's Ashes • An autobiography, written by Frank McCourt, about the hardship, horrors, pain, and suffering he endured • Published in May 1999 • Time set in 1936 • Settings: Brooklyn, NY; Limerick, Ireland • Major Characters: Frank McCourt, Angela McCourt, Malachy McCourt • Won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics' Circle Award • Was also made into a movie • Has a sequel, ’Tis

  6. Synopsis Frank McCourt starts his life in Brooklyn, New York. After his beloved sister Margret dies, the family decides to move back to Limerick, Ireland. However, moving does not make life any better. The family still lives in poverty, Frank’s father keeps drinking, Angela has a miscarriage, and Frank’s two younger brothers die. Barred from the good schools because of his social status, teeth falling out from malnutrition, and facing life with a shiftless alcoholic father, McCourt nevertheless survives on his wits and later returns to America to start his life over.
