  1. Helping Hands First Lego League 2012 / 2013 Senior Solutions Project

  2. Things to think about when setting up the Legocy Helping Hands database: Safety and Privacy will always be the first priorities. No personal information will be shared outside of the approved groups and participants. No under age helper will ever be asked to help a Senior without proper adult supervision. For Seniors without a computer or Internet connection, there will be a 1-800 number to call to put in your request for a Legocy Helping Hands partner. The 1-800 person will have access to the database and will enter the request on the calendar.

  3. Legocy interviewed Mr. & Mrs. Schubert of Aberdeen, Maryland. Both of our “Seniors” shared things they like to do now, that are harder to do as Seniors. Both shared things they do with their hands. Mr. Schubert likes to do woodworking and coin collecting. Mrs. Schubert likes to do cooking and canning of her own food. Legocy first thought of building Robotic hands that could help Mr. & Mrs. Schubert and other Seniors. We thought of gloves the Schuberts could wear that had electrodes or some device in the fingers. The gloves could send a signal to a pair of robotic hands that could do the woodworking or put the coins into the holders, or help with opening and sealing jars for cooking and canning.

  4. When we did our research on Robotic hands we found out there were hundreds of Projects already being worked on. Here are just two of the images we found online:

  5. At the next meeting Dr. Ron Jefferies spoke to the Legocy Team and he shared about some of the challenges Seniors are having at Oak Crest Village where he works as a Doctor. He asked about our Project and said many Seniors would love to have “Helping Hands”. But, he said even more than Robotic Hands, most Seniors would love to know that there was a person to help them with their chores or their tasks. Legocy met and talked about this and decided to do our Project on a different kind of “Helping Hands”. Legocy Helping Hands will be a list of people of all ages who are willing to help Seniors. We have developed a sample database that can be made available to all Seniors who need help with their chores or tasks. TheLegocy Helping Hands database can be customized for any location and for any type of task or chore. Our Project will describe how to set it up and how it works.

  6. Last Meeting Kylie, Hannah and Fletcher worked on the Legocy Helping Hands project while the rest of the Team kept working on the Robot Game missions. Below is the rough drawing from their work and the notes from their Project work. The next Slide will explain the progress made so far on the Helping Hands Project.

  7. Last meeting Kylie, Hannah and Fletcher worked hard on the Legocy Helping Hands Project while the other Team members continued adjusting the NXT and working on the Robot Game missions. After Snack break we did a practice along with some rough props. One of the team held up a cardboard divider which is shown in the middle of the drawing. One one side of the divider is our Senior and on the other side is the Legocy Helping Hands Hotline Center. Each of the 10 Team members will have a part to play during the skit. Two will be “readers”; two will handle audio/visual and props; two will be the Legocy Hotline workers; 3 will be on standby to run out on appointments; and 1 will handle the Appointment Calendar. The scan on the previous slide also lists the props that will ne needed for the skit. Team members will be working on collecting “portable” props which can easily be transported to the competition and setup when it is Legocy’s turn to present. The kids are excited and a little nervous, and the coaches are confident they are going to do a Great Job with this project. I know Mr. & Mrs. Schubert are anxious to see the Senior Solution the team has come up with!

  8. Here is the list of Props needed for the presentation of the project: Calendar page, bulletin board, big box, lamp, one, fake or not working phone, two computers, gray wig, vest, jeans, shoes, tie, T-shirt, table, 3 chairs and our team T-shirt’s, and a pencil. Are all we need for the presentation. _________________________________________________________________ Characters in the skit: Kylie, Hannah, Gabe Raiber and Daniel. = helpers Peter, Gabe beach, = sound and music Fletcher = senior Christian and Matt = readers Ethan = props
