  1. WLD 3090 Analyzing issues in wildlife By: Ash Kolstad

  2. Past Trends of Wildlife • Wearing fur coats and clothing started to distinguish between the poor and rich • Rich men would wear furs to show a sense of dominance and pride over the poor • The early 1600’s started a demand for beaver pelts to wear as fashion, which made hunting a huge demand for money and commercial uses

  3. Present Trends • Before the 20th century poaching has been used by slaves for supplements and for use to better off themselves • Poaching now has destroyed human rights and is more frequent with commercial hunters due to the increase of hunting fees. • Hunting fees for a Canadian in Alberta to hunt all regulated and legal animals in terrestrial zones costs around $500 a year per person, so to make more money faster some companies as long as people poach.

  4. Stakeholder: African Safari Tour Guide • Wildlife should be used to show beauty but preserve their habitat and way of life to improve life quality • Nature should be used for looking, not slaughtering. • Wildlife should never be threatened of else it will leave the food chain unbalanced with to much human activity towards organisms

  5. Concerns With Wildlife • Scientifically- ChloroFluoro Carbons are the major cause of the O-zone depletion and the major cause for the global warming scare which once the Ozone is depleted there is no rebuilding it. • Economically-Once things are gone, then how will money be made in industries that rely on those sources? Jobs will be lost with poverty in a country increasing due to lack of work • Biologically- Human interference with nature will result in overpopulation and extinction, as with the extinction of the dodo bird due to over hunting. • Aesthetically- We must preserve our environment so that it will be able to support organisms and offer a prosperous society.

  6. Comparison Canada: Eastern Wolf Africa: Lion • Found mostly in Northern Quebec and Ontario, found mostly in forests for protection from hunters • Habitat loss have included all from Southern Canada due to deforestation and also farm land “clear outs”. • This species is not endangered due to hunters kill only 10% of population each year • Wild lions currently exist in sub Saharan Africa and in parts of Asia. • The community of the species that is endangered lives in the Gir Forest which is located in India. • Not much habitat loss but over time the species have migrated to new areas in Africa. • The species has declined in population from 30-50% in the last twenty years due to poaching.

  7. Long Term Plan • To help respect the environment around us we must learn to protect, improve and restore organisms surroundings • Protect: systems must be set up to preserve animals, perhaps an idea is that when thoughts of deforesting occur within a region we move all the organisms in that area to a suitable and sustainable new area so that species may prosper and be left alone. • Improve: Regulations should be enforced to a higher degree, so that the poaching businesses and stop the slaughtering of innocent animals. Hunting businesses should be restricted to a certain number of animals each day that they are allowed to kill so that population doesn’t meet any major deficits. • Restore: When a species is becoming endangered or population has declined, laws and community companies should protect them but also allow them to stay in their habitat and let the repopulation stage continue so that the food chain doesn’t get effected by this.

  8. My Turn • I will never destroy an animals habitat and keep my distance so that the organisms have space, and never poach animals so that the animals are treated fairly and with respect. • Also I will always recycle to ensure that reusable material will never be in landfills being decomposed over hundreds of year and effecting the quality of life of neighboring species.

  9. Natural Resources Defense Council • I agree with the causes of the NRDC because they focus on the main issues the world is faced with including: Global Warming, Wildlife preservation, Clean energy and rebuilding aquatic habitats. • They have about 1.3 million members and are expanding through rallies, posters, and other fundraisers that spread awareness.
