  2. About UNIDO UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. UNIDO’s mandate is fully recognized in buildingresilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. 

  3. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into force. They were adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic UN Summit. The SDGs, also known as Global Goals, build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty. 

  4. UNIDO’s approach UNIDO adopts an integrated approach and intervenes on the macro-, meso-, and micro-levels to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in a comprehensive manner 3. 1. 2. MICRO MACRO MESO Through direct assistance at the national policy level, UNIDO supports the creation of an enabling ecosystem by integrating youth and women into national development and industrial strategies, and by harmonizing these with national policies in related areas such education and employment. Support youth and women in the creation and development of their enterprises, by facilitating access to finance and promoting multi-stakeholder partnerships On the meso-level, UNIDO provides technical assistance to the intermediary support structures to further strengthen the ecosystem. It supports in building national and institutional capacities, and capacities of financial and non-financial support structures.

UNIDO’s intervention examples UNIDO is supporting the Government of Ethiopia in formulating the National Entrepreneurship Strategy within the framework of UNIDO’s Program for Country Partnerships (PCP) for Ethiopia, which presents an integrated assistance package tailored to the specific needs of a given country. UNIDO is conducting first hand data collection and analysis that can support the policy dialogue and facilitate public-private partnerships, such as the study in the MENA region on women entrepreneurship development MACRO UNIDO has developed a number of training tools that aim to enhance the entrepreneurial culture and skillset. The Entrepreneurship Curriculum Program (ECP) deployed in more than 25 countries aims to enhance youth’s technical and learning capability and includes training of teachers and training of students at secondary schools. Similarly, UNIDO’s entrepreneurship training toolkit Start and Grow is inspired by the peer-to-peer learning approach, and provides young women and men with the skills to create and develop sustainable enterprises. In Mali, UNIDO and UNDP joint project addressed the gap in access to finance through mobile banking through a partnership with Orange Money, thereby supporting 27 women productive networks.   6. UNIDO’s partnerships Long-standing experience in industrial development and wide presence on the ground allow UNIDO to engage with key stakeholders and partners to scale up its impact and to harmonize its efforts with ongoing and complementing initiatives on the global level.
