  1. LCM Least Common Multiple

  2. A Multiple of a number is the product of that number and a nonzero whole number.2 x 1 = 22 x 2 = 42 x 3 = 62, 4, 6 are multiples of 2.

  3. There are two methods for finding LCM. • Make a list • Use the ladder

  4. METHOD 1 Make a list of the first few multiples of each number. The smallest number on both (all) lists is the LCM. 12 – 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 24 – 24, 48, 72, 96, 120

  5. Method 2 THE LADDER

  6. Method 2 continued 1st Draw an “L” and write the numbers 2nd Divide by a prime 3rd Write your answer below 12 24 2 2 6 12 3 3 6 1 2

  7. Method 2 continued To find the LCM of 12 and 24 – Multiply all the numbers on the outside of the “L” LCM of 12 and 24 is 3 x 1 x 23 = 24 12 24 2 2 6 12 3 3 6 1 2
