    2. What is a career structure? A clearly definable path from training to a job, with defined promotion steps.

    3. Why is a career structure important? For the young person: A clear understanding of what is necessary to succeed. (and encourages recruitment from outside Europe) For Science. A pipeline of excellence that channels the best young scientists to the top of their profession.

    4. The European perspective The European Union now contains over 300 million people and is committed to free interchange of labour and goods. The European commission tries to unify standards in order to encourage this process.

    5. Science and Europe Scientists should be able to move quickly and simply between jobs of similar types within Europe.

    6. Does a career structure exist in Europe? Not only does it not exist in Europe, but no individual country has a defined career structure.

    8. European career structure needs a brand.

    9. European Science needs a brand. Encourages young talent to stay in science (as opposed to law for instance) Encourages non-European talent to come to Europe Encourages Europeans to stay in, or to come back to, Europe.
