  2. EQ: Analyze characteristics of stars by plotting stars on the H-R diagram. STARTER11/1 and 11/2 TURN IN FIELD TRIP FORMS TO YOUR HR TEACHER ASAP! 1. Analyze this statement: All stars are the same. Do you agree? Defend you answer using evidence from the National Geographic article from last class. 2. Comparing a human life to a star life span, what human life phase would be equal to the formation of a black hole for a star? Would every human experience this phase? Explain? 8.ESS1: Earth’s Place in the Universe 1) Research, analyze, and communicate that the universe began with a period of rapid expansion using evidence from the motion of galaxies and composition of stars. 2) Explain the role of gravity in the formation of our sun and planets. Extend this explanation to address gravity’s effect on the motion of celestial objects in our solar system and Earth’s ocean tides. Quiz Next Class over this standard

  3. Inquiry Warm up

  4. STOP and THINK • What qualities of stars do you think merit consideration when categorizing them? Rank these qualities in order of importance. Now share and compare rankings with your table groups. What are your similarities? Differences?

  5. Star Classification • Characteristics used to classify/sort stars: • Temperature • Brightness (luminosity) • Color • Chemical Composition (elements) • Stars sorted into a spectral class: • O B A F G K M • The tool that best depicts this classification of stars is the Hertzsprung/Russell Diagram. • Analyze the two examples that follow. • Pay attention to how the two different versions represent the same information.

  6. Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram

  7. H-R DiagramVirtual lab • Click on the link • http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/ES24/ES24.html • Read through the information along the left side of the screen. Examine the lab sheet. • Individually explore the characteristics of stars to correctly determine spectral class and accurately place stars on the H-R diagram. • Answer journal analysis questions when complete.

  8. SUMMARY- Pin the Star on the H-R Diagram • Volunteers selected. • Volunteer will be given a star representing a particular class. The volunteer will examine the star. The volunteer will then be blindfolded and spun around. The volunteer will then attempt to place the star in the correct location on the H-R diagram. • The audience members will individually assess and document star placement by each volunteer. Individuals will note on their paper if placement is correct. If incorrect, individuals will document the change which must take place in order for the star to be placed correctly. • Audience members will then verbally guide volunteers to correct placement if necessary. Volunteers have two tries to correct placement. • If the volunteer manages correct placement they earn a reward.

  9. Socrative Check (for assessment points) • 1. Open up you computer • 2. Go to Socrative Student • 3. Use this code__________ • When finished- close Socrative, return to daily presentation, and go to the summary page. • Complete summary as directed.
