  1. Lab Safety Dress code and general safety

  2. Introduction • Today we will be discussing what to wear and what NOT to wear in the science laboratory! • We’ll also discuss some general safety procedures

  3. Dress code in the science laboratory is extremely important. There are a lot of potentially dangerous materials and equipment in the lab including sharp instruments, bunsen burners, glassware, chemicals, gas and fire. The dress code is put into place to keep you safe while you explore the fascinating world of chemistry!

  4. Topic One - long hair • Long hair should always be tied back when working in the laboratory - especially when working around an open flame! • Long hair can easily catch fire or accidentally come in contact with the materials you are working with.

  5. Topic Two - feet • It is important to wear closed toes shoes while working in the laboratory. • Flip flops and sandals will not protect your feet if there is a chemical spill or a sharp object accidentally falls on them.

  6. Topic Three - Jewelry • It is not a good Idea to wear jewelry while working in the lab. • Some metals react with the chemicals we will be using. • Some jewelry could get caught on glassware or other objects and cause an accident or spill.

  7. Topic four - eyes • Safety goggles should always be worn when working with chemicals. • Protecting your eyes is critical! Slight irritations can get worse and could even cause permanent damage if eyes are not flushed as soon as they come into contact with an irritant.

  8. Topic five - clothing • Wear appropriate clothing on lab days. Accidents happen so don’t wear your favorite shirt! • Extremely loose fitting clothing can cause accidents too! • I will be ordering lab aprons - not attractive but they protect!

  9. Topic six - accidents • Report all accidents even if they are minor!

  10. If you spill something • If you spill something report it to me as soon as possible. I will know the best way to clean up the spill

  11. If you break something • Broken glassware should not be thrown into the general wastebasket. We dispose of broken glassware in a special container

  12. Topic seven – handling chemicals • Never smell an unknown chemical unless directed by your teacher. Some fumes are very irritating. • Never taste an unknown chemical unless directed by your teacher.

  13. Topic eight – lab equipment • Science lab equipment is for science labs only. • Do not use laboratory glassware for drinking or eating

  14. Concluding… • Every lab day will not be a potential hazard! I will let you know when you need to follow a specific dress code. I will also let you know how strict the dress code needs to be! • Let’s be smart, safe, and enjoy laboratory experiments!
