  1. UW Common Look & Feel in Applications UW Web Steering Committee 1 April 2005 Andrea Chappell, IST

  2. The situation • CL&F guidelines had in mind web pages created in an editor • Some web sites have key pages delivered from within applications • Examples: • PeopleSoft apps (Quest, myHRinfo) • UW-ACE • DE course-on-CD (export from UW-ACE) UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  3. The issue to consider The Steering Committee should be aware: • Groups working within the confines of these applications may not gain the benefits. Not to say that the CL&F should not apply! • There should be a balance struck between the required effort and adherence to the guidelines. UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  4. UW-ACE login page • (Almost) out-of-the-box login page: http://jackdaw.ads.uwaterloo.ca/Angel56/ • Current login page: http://uwace.uwaterloo.ca • Experimental CL&F login page: https://uwangeldev.uwaterloo.ca/uwangeldev61/ UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  5. UW-ACE effort to conform • Limited tailoring opportunity built-in. • Small effort: Login page footer, and importing the UW banner image. • Major effort: Modify three of vendor scripts, add one of our own scripts. • 2-3 days the first time. • Locating code, determining how works. UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  6. PeopleSoft: Quest, myHR • An original PeopleSoft login page: https://sidley.uwaterloo.ca:11929/LSUG/signon.html • MyHRinfo (removed lang., changed images) https://myhrinfo.uwaterloo.ca/PSHRMS/signon.html • "Login to Quest" (modified) https://uni.quest.uwaterloo.ca/servlets/iclientservlet/SA/?cmd=login UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  7. PeopleSoft effort to conform • Limited flexibility to change L&F. • Small effort: Change logo (global). • Larger effort: Create external web page (such as Quest login) and change internal signon to pick up this page. Also, login must point back in to actual Quest login. UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  8. DE CD-on-Course • Over to Cathy! UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  9. Applying CL&F intent to application environ. … • Evolution of web page creation tools • Doesn’t really apply to within apps • Emerging accessibility standards • Depend upon apps to build in • Simpler web page creation and update • Not using the CSS so don’t gain benefits UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  10. Applying CL&F principles to application environ. … • Separating the content from the design; • Not using framework, so opportunity may not apply. • Sharing a common, professional UW look and feel; • Yes, but with efforts! • Supporting accessibility by embracing W3C standards; • Need to be provided by application. • Easing the job of content providers; • Generally more effort. • Move UW-wide web changes into place more easily. • Doesn’t apply in application environment. UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005

  11. Summary • Same good reasons to have prominent application web pages conform. • Need to balance with efforts required, esp. given CL&F intended benefits not gained. • More experience as we go. UW CL&F in Applications - UW Web SC - 1 April 2005
