  1. Training in the WorkplaceAssignment 2 November 2013

  2. Scenario You are part of a workplace training consultancy and have been given the task of coordinating the training needs of a diverse range of employees across different industry sectors. To do this you will create a training prospectus.

  3. P3 As a group you need to agree on the format of the training prospectus. • What size will it be? • Landscape or portrait? • Will it incorporate pictures or just text. • How will content be laid out?

  4. Collect up all of the training needs identified in the class – or if there is insufficient information, use the profiles in annexe 2 Assume that everyone is now employed in their favoured occupation (explored in Assignment 1). Your task, as a group is to create a training prospectus which meets the needs of all individuals. and agree together on who will compile the different sections of the prospectus.

  5. Break up into smaller groups for the tasks described below. Take into account the way different sectors work. Set out a timetable for training. Set out the outline content of the training. This should show the title of the course, its aim and the subject areas it will cover.

  6. Create a budget for the training. This should show, as a minimum, the price of the course per person; the room hire costs if appropriate; and any other costs that might be appropriate (e.g. printed materials or hospitality costs like tea and biscuits). You might also include special offers such as the cost for running the course for a group (as opposed to a price per learner).

  7. Consider whether: • A qualification is always necessary • Short or long courses are appropriate • The courses should be delivered internally or externally (i.e. by an outside trainer). • The training should take place on or off site.

  8. In a presentation to the rest of the class, your group has been asked to explain your rationale for your training programme. In particular you should demonstrate an understanding of matching needs with training activity. (M3) Individually, compare the costs of training across all presentations and evaluate the cost effectiveness of your own budget plan. (D2)

  9. Annexe 2Skills Needs Profiles and Training Course Requests for Assignment 2.WSC Business Park houses a diverse range of businesses who have an assortment of training needs.

  10. Jane works in IT and is hoping to improve her programming skills especially using Microsoft products. She is not a beginner but neither is she a specialist. An intermediate course could be useful. • Mo is a technician at a gaming company. He is hoping to become a manager which will mean moving away from his hands on programming role. His boss is happy for him to do some management training but he will need to fit this around his work - so weekends and evenings may be the easiest to manage. • Jane is an office manager who needs to update her health and safety training. She thinks there may be as many as 25 other colleagues who could do with an update on latest health and safety legislation.

  11. John and Raj work in PR in a tourism attraction. They both need to do some additional PR training to refresh their knowledge. They don’t mind teaming up with a hotel in the town who may also want to do the same sort of thing. They are wondering if there might be a benefit in looking at PR opportunities from a whole town perspective rather than just their specific company. • Max and ten others need training in time management. • Fatima and her team of eight needs to go on a motivation course to help boost morale in their management consultancy company. • Chloe and three others want to go on a leadership training course.

  12. Bob and Kelly need leadership and management training but are not sure where to start. • Bea and nine of her team would like an HR course which will help keep them up to date with legislation. • Jack, Sally and Chloe need to go on a negotiation skills course. They have heard that there may be several other companies on the business park who may be interested in the same thing. Confidentiality may be an issue although Chloe has suggested that the course could be based around generic negotiation skills. • Wendy is a building surveyor and needs to go on a “sustainable building products” course.

  13. Richie has a team of young apprentice builders who need a basic course in building. He tends to teach them on the job but would like you to provide an away form job training course to improve the quality of their work. He has enquired about a two day residential course. • Eloise is keen to improve her PowerPoint and presentation skills. She works closely with Joanne and is thinking of asking her if she can join her team for some training. • Joanne would like her team of 12 to do a presentation skills course. They are at various levels and so some thought would need to go into how to cover all the skills ranges on one course. • Noah has five people who would like to do intermediate accounts training. He has been working in the accounting team for six months and has difficulty following all of the procedures for Sage. He thinks others could benefit from a Sage specific course too.

  14. So…. • Groups of threeor four. • Discuss, and agree together on who will compile the different sections of the prospectus. • Set out a timetable for training. • Set out the outline content of the training. • This should show the title of the course, its aim and the subject areas it will cover. • Create a budget for the training.
