  1. WHAT IS SLEUTH ...? sleuth is a unique software tool for developing strategies for behaviour management in schools

  2. HOW DOES SLEUTH WORK...? sleuth analyses recorded incidents of behaviour to reveal potential triggers for different types of behaviour in individuals, groups and for the whole school Use the results to develop effective behaviour management strategies based on the facts about behaviour in your school

  3. WHY USE SLEUTH ? "For you to effectively teach, you need to know what triggers certain types of behaviour and what is disengaging children from learning ... not what you think you know but what you actually know” David Moore - HMI

  4. WHAT DOES SLEUTH DO … ? • Reduces TeacherWorkload by improving the planning, management and delivery of pastoral support • Encourages Consistency in dealing with, and responding to, behaviour issues • ImprovesBehaviour by identifying learning, environmental or social factors that have a positive or negative effect on behaviour

  5. … WHAT DOES SLEUTH DO ? • Shares Good Practice by providing access to evidence of effective behaviour management strategies • Encourages Communication amongst staff by providing instant access to complete information • Supports Intervention by early identification of those at risk of disaffection

  6. DETAILED BEHAVIOUR ANALYSIS Analyse details for: • an individual student • a group of students • the whole school

  7. TARGET BEHAVIOUR ANALYSIS ON … ... an individual, group or the whole school For example: • which students are most at risk of disaffection ? • which house team has the most good behaviour merits ? • has behaviour for the whole school improved this term ? • which staff require support to address year 9 behaviour ? • is Kay L’s behaviour better after changing tutor groups ?

  8. TARGET BEHAVIOUR ANALYSIS ON ... … a term, a weekday, a period, time within lesson For example: • has bad behaviour reduced since introducing rewards? • what time of day does most class disruption occur? • do extra playground staff reduce lunchtime incidents ? • has Ian K’s mentoring this term curbed his bullying ? • are there fewer referrals to the SMT since INSET?

  9. TARGET BEHAVIOUR ANALYSIS ON ... … a behaviour type/group, a sanction or reward For example: • which behaviours are most disruptive to teaching ? • are sanctions/rewards consistent with the behaviour ? • which behaviours are referred on to senior staff ? • did rewards improve Mark K’s behaviour ? • how does the school day affect types of behaviour ?

  10. TARGET BEHAVIOUR ANALYSIS ON ... … an ethnic group, a gender, literacy level or SEN … a location around school, a class layout … a subject, a teaching style or type of interaction … reporting staff, actioning staff or covering staff …. or use any combination of these for even more detail

  11. EXAMPLE SLEUTH STUDENT REPORTS Select a student and display: • a summary of incidents they were involved in showing the dates and staff reporting • see the frequency and types of behaviour they displayed • see a breakdown of subjects where incidents have occurred

  12. EXAMPLE SLEUTH STUDENT REPORTS • see when during the day most incidents occur • see when during the lesson most incidents occur • see the frequency and trend of incidents during the term

  13. USE SLEUTH REPORTS FOR …... • parent teacher interviews to engage support • presenting at SMT, governor, or staff meetings • setting and tracking behaviour targets with students • resource planning and decision making • monitoring effectiveness of behaviour policy

  14. USE SLEUTH REPORTS FOR …... • preparing for behaviour audits • developing student pastoral support plans • OFSTED inspections • supporting student transition between schools • assessing staff development and training needs

  15. EASY TO USE Review all, or a summary of, recorded incidents relevent to you: • for onestudent • for a year group • referred to you • for this week

  16. EASY TO USE Select your behaviour types and actions with a mouse click: • simple • fast • consistent • intuitive

  17. EASY TO USE Automatically generate a document for each sanction/reward: • a letter home • a certificate • a detention slip • a report card

  18. Don’t take our word for it … This is what schools using sleuth have to say ...

  19. REDUCING TEACHER WORKLOAD “sleuthreduces our paperwork, saves us time and helps us make better decisions” Headteacher - Oxfordshire Secondary School “sleuth has given the senior management more time to find solutions as it records problems in one-tenth of the time” Headteacher - Kent Primary School

  20. SUPPORTING STAFF AND STUDENTS “sleuth enables us to target support for staff and pupils more appropriately, recognising staff are part of a team and henceare more likely to report things due to the follow-upprocedures” Head of Year - Hounslow Secondary School “The reports are useful at parent meetings. The analysis helps us set targets for behaviour.” Assistant Headteacher - Buckinghamshire Secondary School

  21. IMPROVING COMMUNICATION “sleuth allows data to be discussed and cooperation between staff encouraged in discipline strategies” Assistant Headteacher - Bridgend Secondary School “sleuth can show parents concerns about their son or daughter and helps to set behaviour targets” Head of Behaviour Support - Dorset Secondary School

  22. EASY TO USE “Even the most computer phobic could use the system, ease of use is definitely a plus” Assistant Headteacher - Rhondda Cynon, Taff Secondary School “sleuth is easy to use and does not frighten even the most luddite of computer user” Headteacher - Oxford Secondary School

  23. ENHANCING BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT “sleuth gives us instant knowledge about children in class and helps us to develop better strategies to support learning” Headteacher - Kent Primary School “sleuth does not purport to do everything, it justdoes the behaviour management bit really well. It has enabled us to improvebehaviour because we can be proactive” Headteacher - Oxfordshire Secondary School

  24. BETTER DECISION MAKING “Since we started using sleuth in school I have found it to be very powerful, the bigger picture is beginning to emerge, outlining fascinating trends. “We are now making decisions affecting the curriculum and other areas based on up to date information. It has real power to affect the way we work to manage behaviour and the decisions we make.” Deputy Headteacher - Secondary School - Birmingham

  25. EARLY INTERVENTION STRATEGIES “The beauty of the system is its graphical feedback on trends in individual behaviour. “These in turn can be used for further remedial intervention with the pupil in question - or for praise” Education Guardian - BETT Preview
